How To Make Your Massage Clients Relax Fast

In order to give a great massage, it's imperative to help your clients relax as soon as possible. I've found that over the years of my practice, these techniques done in a certain order are very efficient and extremely effective in getting your massage clients to relax fast. Helping to guide your clients into relaxation quickly will enhance their massage experience and make your job much easier in the long run. If you perfect these techniques, your massage clients will know that when they come to you, they can count on you to take them away and to a better place fast! There are a few key points you want to implement and you'll find that if you do them in this order, things will run very smoothly and get you the results much quicker than if you don't.

1. Put them in the comfort zone. Whether your client is a first timer or a regular, always greet them and ask them what are their specific needs today. Do they need pain relief, to relax or a little of both? Tell them that you are going to give them a great massage or that you're going to take great care of them. Confidence helps to put clients at ease because you are telling them that their needs are going to be taken care of so they can stop worrying about it.

2. After you've discovered their treatment needs, ask them how much time they'd like for you to spend on those areas and then do it. In fact, work on those areas first so they know they've been taken care of. Working on the areas of interest first puts them in relaxation mode fast because they don't have to wonder or worry about when you're going to get to it. I can't tell you how many clients have complained to me about other therapist just doing a routine. Every massage client is unique and so should be their treatment.

3. Use visual words/cues to help them relax. I personally never ask my clients to "Relax". Asking someone on your massage table to relax can come across as a little condescending. Instead, I prefer to use words they can see. When I'm moving an arm or a leg around, sometimes they have trouble letting me. They want to help or they may be unaware of the holding pattern. When they are holding something tight, I will ask them to let that area to be soft. If that doesn't work, I'll gently shake it out, and this time I'll ask them to be soft and fluid. This usually works but if they need a little extra help, I'll throw in some humor. You can say something like "Hey you're on vacation, let me do all the work!" or "I appreciate the help but you're on break right now!" Come up with your own line but be careful not to insult your client while they're on the massage table. Sometimes a little light and tasteful humor is all that's needed to help your clients to laugh and let go!

Remember that your clients are coming to you for assistance with pain or stress and its our job as massage therapists to guide them and get them where they need to go. Try practicing all these techniques in this order and you should find your massage practice to be more enjoyable for you and your clients.

Tips For Choosing A Massage Therapist In Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, Ohio is one of the best places to stay in America today. It has been fondly called "The Biggest Small Town in America." Its perfect mix of urban, suburban and rural elements makes Columbus a very attractive place for people to live and to do business in. This city is a confluence of many different cultures, thus many different therapeutic practices are available for you. In Columbus, choosing a masseuse based on your preferences is a very easy task; you just need to be able to discern the different kinds of massage and ensure that the massage therapist you choose is qualified to perform them.

The only thing that you really have to check for any massage therapist is that they have a license from the State Medical Board. Other certification from training and for the massage that they are specializing in is also a plus. Referrals from other massage enthusiasts and from the city’s health offices are also an integral part of your search process. Good massage therapists generally have good feedback readily available, so check online in places such as Google Places or Yelp for reviews from past customers.

Here are some of the common types of massage available in Columbus, Ohio and nationwide:

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage or classic massage is the most common kind of massage available. Swedish massage reduces pain, and may be able to relieve joint stiffness. Swedish massage is actually just simple hand movement and kneading.

Deep Tissue Massage

Unlike Swedish massage, deep tissue massage is aimed at the deeper structures of your muscle tissue and fascia (connective tissue). Deep tissue massage is more intense than Swedish and may actually cause you to be sore the next day. This type of massage can help relieve muscle knots and deep tension.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is any massage taken after an athletic activity to relieve any pain by stimulating the body’s production of endorphins, the natural pain killer. It can also be used to enhance warm-up and cool-down activities before exercise to ensure that you will not have any torn ligaments or muscles.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massages makes use of heated round basalt stones placed above key points in the body to relax the muscles. While the hot stones produce an effect similar to the massage itself, adding reflexology or shiatsu massages will double the effect.

Reflexology is the use of massages to certain zones or regions in a person’s foot or palm to relieve the tension in another part of the body. It is commonly coupled with oils and aroma therapy to soothe the target body part. Reflexology derives its theory from the Eastern medical notion of meridians and qi, which basically states that the reflexologist redirects the flow of energy within the body to provide healing.

Qualified massage therapists may use any combination of the above techniques when performing massage therapy services. For example, you may be needing sports massage on a particular day, or maybe even some hydro therapy (hot and cold treatment) for a flare up of tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome. With the right massage therapist in Columbus, Ohio, the possibilities are endless!

Zero Gravity Massage Chairs - What The Technology Is And How We Benefit

The thought of Zero Gravity was created out of the NASA space program to be able to deal with the particular problems of large compressional forces felt by Astronauts while they launch into space. Astronauts have been plagued with exhaustion during the launch procedure due to Gravities natural compression upon the human body especially the human backbone. As a result of extensive research NASA has perfected the "Neutral Body Posture" position that's perfect for evenly distributing constraints on the human body (entire body rather than the backbone) as well as subsequently putting the human body in to an enhanced condition of- relaxation. This specific discovery in dealing with gravitation forces may be applied to numerous facets of health and wellness therapy.

The "Neutral Body Posture" is the ideal posture for an individual aiming to become thoroughly relaxed. Our bodies requires a reclined position elevating the feet above the heart as well as creating a torso-to-leg angle of roughly 128 degrees with a variation with +/- 7 degrees. This position has also been termed as the "Anti-Gravity" in addition to "90/90" position. As a result of considerable investigation was done from the Research Center for Sports and Healthcare Technology at Ritsumeikan University the "Natural Body Posture" position has been proven to be the perfect posture for physical relaxation.

Zero Gravity Loungers have taken total advantage with the relief in addition to relaxation made possible when the body assumes the Natural Body Posture position. With these innovations a number of other relaxation benefits in addition to health benefits happen during this posturing. The human body encounters much less pressure around the backbone simply because of the distribution of forces all through the body, reduced muscle tension because of the natural relaxation effect of the posture, significantly less strain around the heart as this has to work significantly less to pump blood throughout the body, enhanced lung capacity due to the fact of the expanded lungs within the neutral position, and improved circulation in addition to blood oxygen levels because of the ripple effect of greater lung capacity in addition to reduced tension within the heart. All of this really is made possible by just raising the legs above the heart as well as assuming a zero gravity position taking major stress of off the backbone.

Listed Below Are These Ideas in Greater Depth

Maximum Relaxation in the Neck and Back
A person's spine is designed in an 'S' formed curve and separated into three regions i.e. neck, upper back, as well as lower back. When there isn't stress within the muscles with the spine at any curve, we achieve a natural position of the backbone. In a Zero Gravity Lounger, the torso and thigh's are in excellent position, the feet relaxed above the level of the heart and head, in addition to the hips, also the ankles develop a ninety degree angle between them. This results in a neutral position with the spine, where gravitation forces never affect this. Its design supports the natural shape of the backbone combined with the upper and lower back. Thus the neck and back are free of muscle strain and pain.

Relief to Muscles
In a range of relaxation postures we unconsciously put tension on our lower back (think sitting at a workspace all day, then sitting on a chair at your home.) Any time a person goes into a Zero Gravity position the muscles are released from this strain and oxygen rich blood can relax the muscles entirely.

Lung Expansion
When ever an open angle is generated between your torso and thighs, more space is created for the diaphragm to expand. This leads to an increase in oxygen from the air and expanded lungs.

Significantly less Stress on the Heart
In a zero gravity position the blood circulation through the heart actually changes. When a human is in an upright position this requires the heart to operate against the gravitational forces pumping blood up from the legs. In a very reclined position the situation is clearly reversed. Blood flows into the heart with the assistance of gravity as opposed to against this, essentially accommodating the heart's natural function.

Shiatsu is defined as the use of pressure by pressing, sweeping, patting, rolling, and rotating movements. The defining characteristic of Shiatsu is that it is focused on releasing tension in specific locations of the body.

The long gliding strokes and kneading motions that is done by the massage therapist to the patient is a sign of the Swedish massage. This type of massage aims at fostering proper and strong circulation which is recommended for people who get easily stressed out.

Using Deep Tissue Massage Therapy to Reduce Musculo-Skeletal Pain

Deep tissue massage is applied in a systematic way, concentrating on the deeper layers of the body's soft tissues. It aims to release chronic patterns of tension in the body, through slow strokes and deep pressure on the contracted area(s). Deep tissue massage therapy is therapeutic as well as corrective, and done properly should cause neither excessive pain for the client nor strain for the therapist. Working deeply does not equate with working harder or with more effort, but is the result of specific deep tissue massage techniques combined with knowledge of the different layers of the body's soft tissues

What Is Deep Tissue Massage Therapy?

The is a term often used by therapists to indicate that they use strong pressure, and won't just be stroking oil onto the skin. However deep tissue work is not just about the amount of pressure used; it's true intention is to work on all the layers of the body's soft tissues and particularly the structure which covers and encases them - the fascia. Injury, illness or prolonged immobility can cause fascia to become stiff, hardened or stuck to adjacent structures. This in turn causes pain, reduced mobility and impaired function.

Whilst sometimes being slightly uncomfortable, it should never be painful; a good massage therapist should always respect your pain tolerance levels, and will work with you to find a level of pressure that is comfortable for you.

Massage techniques for include the use of knuckles, fists, elbows, and forearms. The pace of a deep tissue massage session is usually slower than that of other massage work, to enable the therapist to pick up information from the client's tissues, assess the best way to address the tension and contractions found, and apply careful and sensitive pressure in order to achieve a comfortable and lasting release.

How Does it Work?

Pain and stiffness in the muscles and joints can be caused by long-term muscle tension, postural imbalance, overuse and injury. All these things can cause muscle fibres to become shortened, tiny pockets of scar tissue to form (fibrosis), and larger areas of scar tissue will get laid down as an injury heals. Shortened muscle fibres also result in reduced blood flow to the area, and inefficient removal of metabolic waste products by the lymphatic system. The net result of this is areas of the soft tissues that become stiff, hardened, and "glued together" in contracted bands - adhesions. Normal movement becomes impossible, and stiffness and pain set in. Deep tissue massage works by gently but firmly working across these bands to separate the tissues again, to lengthen shortened and contracted soft tissue structures, and to encourage efficient circulation to and from the affected area.

Who Benefits From Deep Tissue Massage Therapy?

This type of massage is highly beneficial for people who suffer from consistent muscle pain, especially in the muscles around the neck, lower back and shoulders. This can be caused by work related postural problems, leisure activities such as gardening, sports and exercise related injuries, and can also be the end-result of long-term emotional stress and tension.

The benefits of Deep Tissue Massage include:

• release of tension and stiffness from muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and fascia
• pain relief
• pain management
• increased flexibility and suppleness
• breaks down old scar tissue and adhesions
• improved mobility, posture and physical performance
• faster, more efficient recovery from injury and surgery

What to Expect During and After a Session

The technique usually focuses on specific areas. It can be offered in combination with other styles of massage, as a whole-body treatment or concentrated in one area, for example the lower back or shoulders. Your therapist will work with you to find a comfortable level of pressure, and will work with your breathing to help minimize discomfort and get the best possible release from the tissues.

When a deep tissue massage is done correctly, the benefits are experienced within the next few days. You may feel rejuvenated, or a bit sore, depending on the particular therapy session. Any slight stiffness or pain experienced after a deep tissue massage is a completely normal reaction and will subside within 24-48 hours.

It is advisable to rest and relax as much as possible after your deep tissue massage treatment, take a warm bath, and drink lots of water and/or herbal teas in order to help the body eliminate any waste products that have been released from the soft tissues. Avoiding caffeine and alcohol is also to be recommended, for the same reasons.

Massage Heals the Tissues of the Body

Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a luxury splurge that has no real health benefits. To the contrary, hands-on healing helps you unwind, lowers blood pressure, promotes muscle relaxation and boosts your immune system.

During a massage session, massage therapists use their hands and fingers to press and manipulate your skin, tendons, ligaments and muscles. The strokes gently move your blood, oxygen and lymph to various tissues and organs in a way that normally doesn't happen in the bodies of most people. As a result, the person who is receiving the massage experiences a level of physical and mental renewal that is hard to surpass.

Hidden Health Benefits of Human Touch

Today, numerous well respected studies indicate that massage therapy doesn't only feel good, it also may be good for you. Take a look at the health benefits below and discover the power of human touch:

Stress & anxiety relief
Muscle relaxation
Blood pressure control
Better circulation
Pain reduction
Enhanced cancer treatment
Improved quality of sleep

But there's more - a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine suggests that individuals who undergo massage therapy experience measurable improvements in their immune response.

Mark Rapaport, M.D., and his colleagues from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center followed 53 healthy adults who were divided into two groups: The participants received either 45 minutes of Swedish massage or the same amount of time of light touch massage, which is much milder and served mainly as a comparison to the more vigorous Swedish massage. After examining their blood samples, the scientists found that people in the Swedish massage group experienced a decrease in cortisol and a significant increase in lymphocytes, cells that keep our immune system strong.

"More research is ahead of us but it appears that a single massage may deliver a measurable benefit," Rapaport said in a news release.

Massage is far more potent therapy than most people realize. In fact, it can (and should) replace analgesics as a treatment for tension headaches. As it turns out, it takes only a 30-minute massage on cervical trigger points to boost autonomic nervous system regulation and alleviate the symptoms. Patients also report an improvement in their psychological and physiological state, which goes hand in hand with the reduction in stress and anxiety associated with such a disturbing condition.

Stress and lack of rest have devastating effects on our health, fitness and beauty. Don't be afraid to find yourself a good massage therapist and get some healing on a regular basis. When you're taking care of your skin and what's beneath it, you are taking care of your whole world.

Learning Proper Massage Techniques

There is more to a massage than the ability to perform a good back rub. Any therapist would tell you that there is intense study, formal schooling, and certification involved before you can render a proper massage. You will find professional massage therapists all over Australia have professional therapists who are trained in the art of massage techniques.

Therapists are usually certified in more than one massage technique technique in order to provide whatever service the client would request from them.

Swedish massage

This aims to lessen stress by relieving muscle tension and loosening sore joints. The massage therapist applies soothing, tapping, kneading, and circular strokes on the superficial layers of the muscle using massage lotion or oil. The strokes tend to follow the direction of blood towards the heart, enhancing the flow and assisting in its natural functions.

deep tissue massage

This uses slower strokes, direct pressure, and friction techniques to address chronic muscle tension such as stiff necks, lower back pain, or aching shoulders. It is also useful in addressing pain caused by stress, strain, or injury. While a swedish massage can work on the first few layers of a person's back, a deep tissue massage is required to reach the layers underneath.

Also known as acupressure, this is a technique that originated from Japan. This type of massage applies finger pressure on acupuncture meridians. Therapists use their thumbs to manipulate the flow of "Qi" and energy in the body following the theories of acupuncture, which literally goes back to thousands of years of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

This applies pressure to certain points on the feet, hand, and ears to target corresponding organs and systems in the body. It is meant to promote or stimulate one's internal organs, thereby improving the client's overall body condition.

Sports massage

This kind of massage is adapted from swedish or deep tissue massages, with the intent of meeting special needs of athletes. It involves pre-event massages to warm up muscles and improve circulation, as well as post-event massages to treat injuries and aid in recovery. Massage techniques are typically combinations of different kinds of strokes and pressures. Here are some basic strokes to get you started:

This is a basic open-handed stroke used in swedish massages">swedish massages. Its key characteristics are slow and gentle movements. You start with your fingertips, followed by your fingers and palm until the heel of your hand comes in contact with the body.

This is a kneading stroke that works best on large, meaty muscles. You place both hands down on the muscle with your fingers close together and thumbs extended. The space between your hands should form a triangle. This stroke requires a pinching action as you move your thumb towards your fingers. Take note that you want to pinch the muscle with your palm more than with your fingers.

This involves working thumbs and fingertips in deep circles into the thickest part of the muscles. It is best for treating small knots in muscles.

Massage Therapy Etiquette

Massage therapy sessions are naturally intimate procedures. A Massage Therapist oils, kneads, touches and relaxes the client's body and plays soothing and escaping music in the background. Whether it be receiving or providing this service of healing, it will surely be an intimate experience. Although a professional Massage is licensed and within the confines of a Spa or office, both parties can develop insecurities, feel vulnerable and uncomfortable. This can be especially true of those receiving a Massage for the first time.

The Massage Therapist is trained and responsible for creating a soothing, relaxing and professional environment for the client's pleasure. In this same way, the client is also responsible for communicating with their Therapist in order for them to properly provide a service which is comfortable and without issue. Highly experienced Therapists are also able to direct the client through the Massage so there is as little confusion as possible about the process.

There are several aspects of a Massage which raises the eyebrows of clients which should be noted:

1. Clothing: Each Massage type will outline the amount of clothing a client should wear. For example, during a Swedish Massage the client is asked to strip completely since it is a full body procedure. However, some clients may not be comfortable with baring it all and should know it is fine for them to request they keep one or two articles of clothing on such as their underwear. If a client chooses to bare it all, an experienced Therapist will know how to drape fabric over their bodies in order to not over-expose them.

Before a Massage begins, the Therapist usually will instruct the client on its aspects including the amount of clothing usually discarded. Once this discussion is over, the masseuse leaves the room to allow the client to undress privately and get under a sheet or towel on the Massage table. The Therapist will only uncover the areas of the body that are being Massaged to ensure their client's comfort.

2. Touching: There are several reasons as to why individuals may get a Massage. For instance, a Massage can be sought to alleviate stress, improve relaxation, enhance circulation, etc. The client should understand that they are able to set rules and regulations regarding their body and it is the Therapist's obligation to respect those boundaries. Although therapeutic Massages are sensual they are not intended to be sexual.

If a client, whether male or female, makes an overtly sexual or unsettling request, the Therapist is obligated to forcefully but professionally identify how inappropriate the request is. On the other hand, a Therapist should never assume the parts of the client's body that can be touched. Lastly, it is never appropriate to touch the genitals of a client during a Massage. This is a betrayal of trust, is unethical and can bring about legal action.

Hilot - Effective Filipino Massage Therapy

Hilot is a popular massage method that originated in the Philippines which is commonly used in its provinces. It uses traditional Filipino herbal medicines and ointments as a part of the healing practice.

This type of massage therapy was the only source of medical care for the Filipinos many centuries ago. Even today, in the rural areas of the Philippines, hilot is still used by many people especially the poor people who have no money in getting their sick loved ones to the hospital for treatment.

Hilot is a combination of many types of medical care from healing, setting the bones in place, and delivering babies from pregnant women on rural areas. Most massage therapists are known as "manghihilot" which almost all of them are fond of using herbs and ointments during the massage therapy.

Like most Asian style of massage therapy, Hilot focuses its healing ability by clearing the energy pathways all over the patient's body which is believed to be responsible in providing a healthy condition to the human body. Most of the massage therapists that are good in this method can sense what is wrong with the patient's body by looking at him or her. Hilot, unlike most massage therapy needs communication from both parties as the massage therapist works on the patient's body. This type of massage therapy is a light therapeutic massage that can relax and comfort the patient's body.

During a massage therapy session, the massage therapist asks the patient to lie down on a massage table or bed and remove the upper clothing as he or she starts working at the back part of the patient. Heated banana leaves and other herbal leaves are used and placed on the different areas of the patient's body to help him relax which is similar to the use of hot stones. Herbal ointments are then applied on the back part of the body as a lubricant for better maneuvering of the hands for the different massage strokes. Pressure then is applied as the massage therapist works in relieving back pain and removing stress out of the patient's body. In case the patient experiences painful strokes or too much pressure applied by the massage therapist, he or she should let the massage therapist know how he or she is feeling so that the therapist can adjust and reduce the pressure and effort being used on the patient.

Hilot is a deep tissue massage which is a type of massage commonly used by athletes or individuals that works hard or has stressful jobs. This type of massage therapy relaxes and energizes the body in order to work properly and at its best. The deep tissue massage releases tension on the muscle which calms it and prevents body stiffening that often results as stress on the patient's physical condition. Unlike most massage therapy though, hilot doesn't follow a pattern during a massage therapy session, instead the massage therapist bases his or her work on the treatment needs of the patient. Hilot is an effective method of relieving body pain and other types of sickness.

Understanding the Thai Style of Massage Therapy

A stressful lifestyle is often the cause of premature health complications that are frequently observed in adults. Although there are some spa treatments that are designed to provide rejuvenating therapies for stressed people, the overall well being is yet to be addressed by those traditional methods. Good thing there is the Thai Yoga massage that aims to give a unique soothing experience to spa regulars.

Originally a method in alternative Thai medicine, the Thai massage is now widely being practiced as a style in spa treatment that incorporates some stretching and yoga movements. It works in a manner wherein the client's body is summoned to the rhythmic movements of the massage therapist, using the latter's hands and feet to stretch and press the Sen lines of the body. Unlike the traditional Western spa treatments, this Asian massage style does not use oil. The client is rather dressed with loose clothes that allow for comfortable movements. The effects that are usually observed by the clients include the release of body tensions as well as the overall energizing feeling caused by the massaged sen lines.

In a typical spa setting, the Thai Yoga massage is performed on a sturdy surface padded with a mat. The client will usually lie down on the mat while waiting for the masseuse/masseur to perform stretching, acupressure, yoga movements and reflexology on the body. In saying this, the massage therapist might also include the use of his/her arms, elbows and feet to execute energizing yet soothing exercise-like movements on the client. The therapist would usually work first on the client's feet, moving up to the head. The client may experience being arched and pulled in various ways. Aside from these stretching movements, the therapist also walks on the client's back. All these are performed in a full session of the massage therapy, which basically lasts for at least two hours.

Contrary to the initial reactions to this style of spa massage, the Thai treatment involves no pain. The therapist is skillfully trained in kneading and pulling the important parts of the body without causing undue discomfort to the client. So unless the client has a complicated health condition-like with the case of pregnant women or people with heart diseases-he or she can undergo a Thai-style massage treatment.

There are some advantages of Thai Yoga massage that are usually not observed in most Western styles. With conventional massage therapies, the clients may only experience the physical effect, which is the release of the muscle tensions. However, with Thai Yoga massage, they are given not only the much-needed physical relief, but also some psychological benefits. Aside from giving the clients the advantages of increased blood circulation and muscle toning, this massage style also proves to be effective in dealing with psychological stress.

The Thai style of massage therapy generally revolves in a mixture of Chinese and Indian therapeutical procedures, which is basically the reason why it tend to possess "healing powers" that are reminiscent to yoga. Most clients of this massage style are said to experience a release from anxiety as well as mental clarity.

Massage Therapy - Ensuring That You Have Great Health

Our daily lives are filled with lots of stress and exposure to pollutants of all sorts. This makes us very prone to a variety of ailments. The average person also finds himself too busy to enjoy the fruits of his labors because he suffers from a lot of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. If you feel that your health and fitness levels are not what they should be and that you suffer from a lot of stress, then it is time for you to experience the benefits of massage therapy.

A massage is more than a way to relax yourself. It certainly is a great way to get relaxed because an experienced therapist can soothe a lot of your aches and pains away. This particular treatment works by stimulating your blood circulation while giving your muscles a great workout. The movement of the therapist's hands over your body in a particular pattern aids your blood circulation considerably. This helps to bring nutrition and oxygen to your muscles and to remove toxins that have been accumulated there.

The most immediate response you feel is indeed relaxation, but there are plenty of health benefits as well. For instance, your anxiety levels will reduce by a considerable extent as a result of this treatment. This can help regulate your blood pressure and bring it to a normal level. Your heart rate will also be at the normal level immediately after the session is over. Your body releases fewer stress hormones as a result of this treatment.

Why It's Important for Massage Therapists to Choose a Specialty

When massage therapists finish school and begin working, they might not immediately think of developing their skills for a niche market - after all, massage school is just the beginning, and you learn some of your most invaluable skills on the job! While most massage therapists focus on perfecting their Swedish and deep-tissue skills before moving on to advanced modalities, it is always a good idea to continue to think about how you want to develop your massage career. This way, you can take the classes and training necessary to develop your specialty early on.

Making the Most out of Continuing Education

Throughout the nation, massage therapists must abide by a professional licensing code that requires continuing education in areas such as communicable diseases, CPR training, ethics, and general education. While many massage therapists take the minimum number of courses, or pick available courses close to home that are convenient or inexpensive, it is important to take advantage of this educational opportunity, and pick classes ahead of time that align with your specific interests.

For example, students who have considered furthering their massage career within Reiki, neuromuscular massage therapy (NMT), or medical massage should consider that these modalities require several lengthy and in-depth courses, and can take several months, or years to fully complete. And while the process toward this type of certification is indeed more time consuming than, for example, a weekend class in hot stone technique, it is a step toward a worthwhile skill that not only boosts a resume, but also brings in new clients, helps massage therapists market themselves more effectively, and lays the groundwork for a lengthy and profitable massage career.

Start by browsing different continuing education options offered at schools in your immediate area, as well as regionally. Educate yourself about the time requirements, cost, and specific details about each modality, and truly consider what it takes to become a seasoned professional in that field. This way, you can maximize your time and money on required continuing education courses.

Sports Massage, Reiki, Pregnancy Massage, and More

When you envision yourself working as a massage therapist several years down the line - where do you see yourself working? In a chiropractor's office? For a ballet troupe, football team, or running club? Maybe in a holistic center, spa, or independent practice? Every massage therapist enters the profession for various reasons, and it is important to understand what excites and motivates you about a massage career. Some massage therapists are particularly athletic or interested in sports, and it is this type of therapist who is most often attracted to sports massage. Therapists who enter this practice often work with athletes before, during, and after sports events to prevent injuries, and to treat existing injuries.

Medical massage encompasses several techniques, and can include sports massage, craniosacral therapy, and NMT. Medical massage and its associated practices are often performed by therapists with an interest in injury treatment and prevention as a full time massage career. Other massage therapists gravitate toward energy healing, such as Reiki, which is purported to create a healing effect physically, mentally, and spiritually. Therapists who hold an interest in Reiki may also be interested in acupressure, or aromatherapy. Therapists who wish to expand their practice to accommodate pregnant clients may be interested in becoming certified in pregnancy massage, which enables massage therapists to understand and perform a medically appropriate massage for a mother-to-be.

Whatever your interest for a long-term massage career, there are continuing education training courses available to further your chosen specialty. Again, think about why you want to pursue a specific specialty, and what you think it will give back to you and your clients. Do you see yourself utilizing the specialty skills for years with your clients? If so, carefully consider with whom you will spend your time and money. Find the right program and begin another educational journey. You and your clients will benefit from your endeavors as you pursue your preferred niche in the vast world of advanced massage education.

Certification and Training

Finally, sometimes continuing education classes and experience aren't the only thing massage therapists need to practice a specialty in the field. Check with your state licensing board to ensure you have met the minimum credit hours for a special modality. To date, there is no licensing body for Reiki, but it is required to have achieved a "Level III" status in order to promote yourself as a Reiki master in your massage career.

Likewise, pregnancy massage is not governed by an accredited body, but most continuing education providers will not issue a certification until the student has completed a minimum number of credit hours, typically supported by graded exams, practical sessions, and homework. For certification in neuromuscular therapy massage as a career, massage therapists must take continuing education courses, schedule and sit for an exam, and receive a score evidencing competency in the field. The school or instructor of an advanced massage therapy specialty should be able to explain any applicable certification requirements.

Finding a specialty is an excellent step for massage therapists in their long term career, as it not only enables them to become well educated and better able to treat clients, but exposes the therapist to a whole new field of massage, and its benefits. So if you're considering developing a specialty, do your research, ask questions, and have fun learning about how you can further your massage career while helping your clients.

Improve Health and Relax - Thai Massage

Regardless of our lifestyle, or our financial or social status, we all need to relax. There are hundreds of different ways that people like to relax around the world. Some smoke or drink, others play games or watch TV, some people even exercise! There are healthy ways, neutral ways and unhealthy ways. One way of relaxing, that is usually healthy and effective, is to have a massage. There are many different kinds of massage, including oil, neck and shoulders, Thai, Swedish and Chinese, to name a few. One particular type massage that is popular is Thai massage.

Thai massage has plenty of advantages, including its value and its physical and psychological benefits. Like cuisine, it needs to be experienced in its native environment to get the 'real thing.' Thai massage in Thailand is rarely expensive. A full body massage for one hour can cost as little a $4 U.S. For that you get a good working over, starting at your feet and legs and then your arms and hands. The masseuse or masseur then asks you to roll over onto your front and massages your back an shoulders, then sits you up a little, resting your head on their lap to finish your shoulders and then sometimes your head. It really is a fantastic experience, but the most important thing to do is relax and give your body up to the masseuse or masseur.

The physical and psychological benefits are almost immediate and can last for hours or even days. There is an instant slow bounce to your step and a general aura of happiness and peace. Some people enjoy it and believe in it so much that they even lean Thai massage to take back to their home countries to earn a living from, or relax their family members.

There are also one or two potential disadvantages of Thai massage. Firstly, it hurts and secondly, it is very rarely performed by a qualified professional. Many people cannot relax properly, which causes some discomfort during the massage. In addition, even if you are able to relax entirely, the correct procedure involves the use of elbows and heels pushed into your flesh. It can be quite uncomfortable for anyone who is not a bit of a masochist. However, there is the opinion that the more pain during the massage is evident as more effective relaxation and physical benefit for the hours or days following it. Moreover, due to its origins and the low cost, a Thai massage is usually performed by a masseuse or masseur with little or no recognized qualifications. Years of experience, maybe, but walking on someone's back or digging your elbow into someone's stomach can be potentially dangerous. The ways these people learn Thai massage is often from their peers, and from experience with satisfied or dissatisfied clients.

The fact that Thai massage is so popular, both in Thailand and around the world, is probably proof in itself that it is beneficial, healthy and good value. It has become one of the top ways to relax and even become a good money-spinner for those who want to learn Thai massage for personal or financial reasons.

Massage for Your Teen

If you started to massage your teen as a child, you can continue to do so as long as you both are comfortable with it. If you have never massaged your child, your teen may prefer you taking him or her to a certified massage therapist. (With teens who have never been given a massage as a child, this is pretty much a guarantee.)

Your teen has a lot of stress in his or her life. He/she is busy with school and homework, may be into sports or other after school curricular activities, hold a job, help around the house, etc. He or she may be worried about getting his/her driver's license. Learning how to drive and knowing you could fail your driver's test is a huge stress maker!

Your teen can benefit from massages. It is a good idea to set three to five times a week aside to give your teenager a massage. You can have the massages be as little as fifteen minutes if you so choose.

Find a comfortable and quiet place to perform the massage on your teen. Make this your special quiet time together. You may use essential oils to give the best massage as possible. Plus, the oils will seep into the skin helping your teen benefit even more.

When you give your child the gift of a routine massage you are benefiting his/her health not only mentally but physically as well. When your child is under stress, the stress hormones kick in making it hard for the body to stay healthy. Your child may become sick as the good cells are being taken over and making your child ill.

Your child will be able to focus on schoolwork, his/her job, homework, etc., when he/she is relaxed. You may see your child's grades improve after you start to give him/her a massage a few times per week.

You may decide to give your child a sports massage, deep tissue massage, Trager massage, hot stone massage, etc.

The hot stone massage is extremely relaxing. Specific hot stones are used for different key parts of the body. The hot stones are made out of basalt which is a rock that is rich in iron. Due to the iron, the hot stones retain heat. Since the hot stones are so smooth due to being smoothed over by the river's current, you can also take the hot stones and use them to massage parts of your teen's body during massage time.

To heat the stones you will need to immerse them in water. You will then heat the stones in an electric heating device. Once your teen's muscles are very relaxed, you can apply much deeper pressure if your teen needs it. Your teen will benefit from the warmth of the hot stones as they will improve his or her circulation and calm his/her nervous system.

The whole process makes you feel like a completely different person and gives you a whole new sense of well being.

Massage therapy has been used for centuries for different purposes. The ancient Greek and Romans used it to relax muscle tension and relieve pain as the soldiers had to march long distances and fight difficult battles. In China and Japan massaging was a part of the medical treatments used for pain relief and healing various other illnesses. The techniques used in China and Japan form the basis of many of the techniques used in nowadays. In India, essential oils and spices were used simultaneously with massage, so these are the roots of what today is called aromatherapy.

Massage therapy has developed greatly over the centuries. The ancient Greek and Romans used it mainly for tension and pain relief, but these techniques have come a long way since. Nowadays you can try dozens of different techniques in addition to the old conventional methods. These are of course still there, but if you struggle finding a technique that suits you the best, you might want to experiment with chocolate or honey massage or decide combining your regular massage sessions with aromatherapy.

Do you have the feeling that you just do not have enough strength to continue with the everyday routine? Do you feel stressed constantly and notice how this has taken a toll on your official and personal life? In this case, modern medicine is of little use. Tablets offer only a temporary solution and once you stop taking the medication, the same pattern repeats again. There are few effective solutions to this kind of complicated situation and one of them is massage therapy.

Most seniors will admit that once they have started and have gotten through the initial senior massage they enjoy the brief time of relaxation.

Massage stones are available and can be used hot or cold. We spend quite a bit of time selecting the stones before they are sold to customers to ensure they are true basalt stones which are volcanic in nature and are a source from the beaches of the South Americas. Quality is ensured at the initial selection and then once again when the stones are received at the facility in Arizona. This is one of the reasons customers keep coming back...through their testimonials you will read the full satisfaction the customers are receiving when it comes to the selection of the massage stones.

An example of a set of stones that could be considered by a senior customer would be the crescent shaped marble stones used around the eyes for relaxation, stress relief and how the stones help reduce swelling. Let's look at how and why a senior massage makes you feel good. The heat of the massage stones warms the skin. This allows the body to loosen up so the massage therapist is able to work the deeper muscles. Once the deeper muscles are massaged then the senior will immediately feel the benefits of the increased circulation, the improved blood flow that goes to the surrounding tissues. At the end of the senior massage the customer is able to feel the full effects of the deep muscle massage they just received from the therapist.

If you know if someone that would benefit from a senior massage, mention to them the benefits they would receive and how good it would make them feel. Locate a spa or place that offers senior massages and see if they are interested in trying it one time. Some say that after they are able to feel the full effects of the senior massage then they consider it part of their health management.
