Tips For Choosing A Massage Therapist In Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, Ohio is one of the best places to stay in America today. It has been fondly called "The Biggest Small Town in America." Its perfect mix of urban, suburban and rural elements makes Columbus a very attractive place for people to live and to do business in. This city is a confluence of many different cultures, thus many different therapeutic practices are available for you. In Columbus, choosing a masseuse based on your preferences is a very easy task; you just need to be able to discern the different kinds of massage and ensure that the massage therapist you choose is qualified to perform them.

The only thing that you really have to check for any massage therapist is that they have a license from the State Medical Board. Other certification from training and for the massage that they are specializing in is also a plus. Referrals from other massage enthusiasts and from the city’s health offices are also an integral part of your search process. Good massage therapists generally have good feedback readily available, so check online in places such as Google Places or Yelp for reviews from past customers.

Here are some of the common types of massage available in Columbus, Ohio and nationwide:

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage or classic massage is the most common kind of massage available. Swedish massage reduces pain, and may be able to relieve joint stiffness. Swedish massage is actually just simple hand movement and kneading.

Deep Tissue Massage

Unlike Swedish massage, deep tissue massage is aimed at the deeper structures of your muscle tissue and fascia (connective tissue). Deep tissue massage is more intense than Swedish and may actually cause you to be sore the next day. This type of massage can help relieve muscle knots and deep tension.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is any massage taken after an athletic activity to relieve any pain by stimulating the body’s production of endorphins, the natural pain killer. It can also be used to enhance warm-up and cool-down activities before exercise to ensure that you will not have any torn ligaments or muscles.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massages makes use of heated round basalt stones placed above key points in the body to relax the muscles. While the hot stones produce an effect similar to the massage itself, adding reflexology or shiatsu massages will double the effect.

Reflexology

Reflexology is the use of massages to certain zones or regions in a person’s foot or palm to relieve the tension in another part of the body. It is commonly coupled with oils and aroma therapy to soothe the target body part. Reflexology derives its theory from the Eastern medical notion of meridians and qi, which basically states that the reflexologist redirects the flow of energy within the body to provide healing.

Qualified massage therapists may use any combination of the above techniques when performing massage therapy services. For example, you may be needing sports massage on a particular day, or maybe even some hydro therapy (hot and cold treatment) for a flare up of tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome. With the right massage therapist in Columbus, Ohio, the possibilities are endless!

Massage Therapy Etiquette

Massage therapy sessions are naturally intimate procedures. A Massage Therapist oils, kneads, touches and relaxes the client's body and plays soothing and escaping music in the background. Whether it be receiving or providing this service of healing, it will surely be an intimate experience. Although a professional Massage is licensed and within the confines of a Spa or office, both parties can develop insecurities, feel vulnerable and uncomfortable. This can be especially true of those receiving a Massage for the first time.

The Massage Therapist is trained and responsible for creating a soothing, relaxing and professional environment for the client's pleasure. In this same way, the client is also responsible for communicating with their Therapist in order for them to properly provide a service which is comfortable and without issue. Highly experienced Therapists are also able to direct the client through the Massage so there is as little confusion as possible about the process.

There are several aspects of a Massage which raises the eyebrows of clients which should be noted:

1. Clothing: Each Massage type will outline the amount of clothing a client should wear. For example, during a Swedish Massage the client is asked to strip completely since it is a full body procedure. However, some clients may not be comfortable with baring it all and should know it is fine for them to request they keep one or two articles of clothing on such as their underwear. If a client chooses to bare it all, an experienced Therapist will know how to drape fabric over their bodies in order to not over-expose them.

Before a Massage begins, the Therapist usually will instruct the client on its aspects including the amount of clothing usually discarded. Once this discussion is over, the masseuse leaves the room to allow the client to undress privately and get under a sheet or towel on the Massage table. The Therapist will only uncover the areas of the body that are being Massaged to ensure their client's comfort.

2. Touching: There are several reasons as to why individuals may get a Massage. For instance, a Massage can be sought to alleviate stress, improve relaxation, enhance circulation, etc. The client should understand that they are able to set rules and regulations regarding their body and it is the Therapist's obligation to respect those boundaries. Although therapeutic Massages are sensual they are not intended to be sexual.

If a client, whether male or female, makes an overtly sexual or unsettling request, the Therapist is obligated to forcefully but professionally identify how inappropriate the request is. On the other hand, a Therapist should never assume the parts of the client's body that can be touched. Lastly, it is never appropriate to touch the genitals of a client during a Massage. This is a betrayal of trust, is unethical and can bring about legal action.

Massage for Your Teen

If you started to massage your teen as a child, you can continue to do so as long as you both are comfortable with it. If you have never massaged your child, your teen may prefer you taking him or her to a certified massage therapist. (With teens who have never been given a massage as a child, this is pretty much a guarantee.)

Your teen has a lot of stress in his or her life. He/she is busy with school and homework, may be into sports or other after school curricular activities, hold a job, help around the house, etc. He or she may be worried about getting his/her driver's license. Learning how to drive and knowing you could fail your driver's test is a huge stress maker!

Your teen can benefit from massages. It is a good idea to set three to five times a week aside to give your teenager a massage. You can have the massages be as little as fifteen minutes if you so choose.

Find a comfortable and quiet place to perform the massage on your teen. Make this your special quiet time together. You may use essential oils to give the best massage as possible. Plus, the oils will seep into the skin helping your teen benefit even more.

When you give your child the gift of a routine massage you are benefiting his/her health not only mentally but physically as well. When your child is under stress, the stress hormones kick in making it hard for the body to stay healthy. Your child may become sick as the good cells are being taken over and making your child ill.

Your child will be able to focus on schoolwork, his/her job, homework, etc., when he/she is relaxed. You may see your child's grades improve after you start to give him/her a massage a few times per week.

You may decide to give your child a sports massage, deep tissue massage, Trager massage, hot stone massage, etc.

The hot stone massage is extremely relaxing. Specific hot stones are used for different key parts of the body. The hot stones are made out of basalt which is a rock that is rich in iron. Due to the iron, the hot stones retain heat. Since the hot stones are so smooth due to being smoothed over by the river's current, you can also take the hot stones and use them to massage parts of your teen's body during massage time.

To heat the stones you will need to immerse them in water. You will then heat the stones in an electric heating device. Once your teen's muscles are very relaxed, you can apply much deeper pressure if your teen needs it. Your teen will benefit from the warmth of the hot stones as they will improve his or her circulation and calm his/her nervous system.

Massage Therapy For Over All Relaxation

If you are feeling tired or stressed either physically or emotionally, massage therapy is the perfect solution for you. It first removes all tension from the body, allowing you to fully concentrate on the spiritual side. This way you can achieve balance between your body and mind. The whole process makes you feel like a completely different person and gives you a whole new sense of well being.

Massage therapy has been used for centuries for different purposes. The ancient Greek and Romans used it to relax muscle tension and relieve pain as the soldiers had to march long distances and fight difficult battles. In China and Japan massaging was a part of the medical treatments used for pain relief and healing various other illnesses. The techniques used in China and Japan form the basis of many of the techniques used in nowadays. In India, essential oils and spices were used simultaneously with massage, so these are the roots of what today is called aromatherapy.

Massage therapy has developed greatly over the centuries. The ancient Greek and Romans used it mainly for tension and pain relief, but these techniques have come a long way since. Nowadays you can try dozens of different techniques in addition to the old conventional methods. These are of course still there, but if you struggle finding a technique that suits you the best, you might want to experiment with chocolate or honey massage or decide combining your regular massage sessions with aromatherapy.

Do you have the feeling that you just do not have enough strength to continue with the everyday routine? Do you feel stressed constantly and notice how this has taken a toll on your official and personal life? In this case, modern medicine is of little use. Tablets offer only a temporary solution and once you stop taking the medication, the same pattern repeats again. There are few effective solutions to this kind of complicated situation and one of them is massage therapy.

Massage Therapy Tools for Back Pain Therapy, Stress Relief and More

Massage therapy spa tools and techniques vary from one clinic to the next, but which tools will make you the most successful? In order to be successful, it is important to know the history of it and understand the continuing education techniques and classes that are available. In fact, to learn about the tools used, such as oils, stones, rocks, massage table warmers, lighting, room decor, or even towels can affect the way your spa session will proceed with your client.

What types of massage therapy do patients want most? Well, depending on whether there is medical therapy which is necessary, or back pain therapy, or simply stress relief therapy that is needed, your client will enjoy different types of tools. So, what is a basic set of tools or techniques every therapist artist should master? Some artists practice natural therapy or relaxation therapy from a home office, and simply use a bed as their main massage tool. However, massage therapy spa place has a comfortable, unique, table that add to the back pain therapy experience by lessening the risk that you injure yourself while in.

Learn massage therapy at a massage therapist school near you but be sure you understand that the techniques often vary from school to school. If you believe in Zen, yoga and other meditational practices, it may be a good idea to see if your school's administration has an open-minded curriculum in which you can further your practice and massage continuing education. In order to properly learn massage therapy, you must develop your own artistic style, have personable skills to appeal to clients, and have the right tools.

A spa will also provide you with towels and foam face cradles for your clients to enjoy their experience. Over the course of history of massage, techniques, tables, beds, lighting and stones have changed. However, it is most important that you choose the massage therapy tools you felt most comfortable using in your training course. Carrying cases are a good idea, in order to have your hot stone rocks, towels, oils, and any other equipment you feel you need from your massage continuing education courses.

When you learn about back pain therapy, it is important to consider your patient's comfort. Some physicians suggest that heat or ice can help lower back pain therapy for your clients. Gentle, soft techniques are sometimes the best, but other schools of massage therapy believe that kneading into the back is the best technique to avoid future back pain.

The American Massage Therapy Association provides career advice and additional continuing education to help you further your career and choose the correct tools. The organization also offers practice license insurance, so that you can learn massage therapy, practice it, and remain safe, against lawsuits.

Lingam Massage - Alternative Therapy To Address Impotence

While there are various body massages that offer enormous physical gains and health benefits, the lingam massage aka tantra lingam massage is the route through spirituality, discovering and differentiating the soul and the self.

Lingam massage is known as a spiritual tradition and has its origin rooted in India and invented some 4000 years ago as a way of live celebrating union of the body, and the emphasis is given to the union of body with the heart, mind and the soul. The massage is in fact a form of yoga and is also prescribed for those who suffer from issues of impotence and urinary incontinence. It should be noted that the massage is not a recommendation for size gains and things thereof.

Lingam massage should be regarded as an alternative therapy for treating impotence issues arising from premature ejaculation.

Not every spa and massage parlor is qualified to offer the lingam massage, and it is only qualified massage therapists and centers offer this rare form of exercise where in pressure is applied on a man's genitals and the deep tissues will be manipulated once the pressure reaches the points extremely cautiously in a structured form. The massage is initially approached as a reflexology technique. It is known that reflexology has many benefits including improving the blood circulation, reducing the stress (remember stressed mind can result in breakdown of immune system resulting in several medical conditions), stimulating the nerve functioning and eventually revitalizing mind and the body.

The person who opts to receive the lingam massage therapy will also have to comply with certain rules as prescribed the therapist. Chemical-loaded oils are a strict no in the massage and the benefits are far from felt if cheap organic chemical lotions are used. A qualified lingam massage therapist would only use recommended special oils derived from herbs and start gently applying pressure. These oils will leave no side effects on the skin unlike the synthetic lotions do. While the direct benefit of the massage is treating PE problems it also de-stresses the mind and the body to a greater extent just like some other body massages.

The massage receiver will be made to lie on back with pillows or cushion under the head. A pillow is placed under his hips to rise his hips and then the legs are spread with knees bent. Before starting the actual therapy the receiver is taught some deep breathing techniques so his mind is calm and tension free. The therapist will then apply the herbal oils and give the massage gently first through the legs. The receiver will be asked to continue relaxed breathing as long as the massage is given. It is after the prescribed amount of time of massaging that the person experiences union of body and soul.

How to Get Rid Of Cellulite With the Help of Massage

Doing daily massage helps cellulite in many ways. Aside from helping cellulite, massage is natural, effective and perhaps one of the most pleasant treatments for cellulite. By combining massage with a cellulite cream or oil, either bought or homemade, you combine the two treatments to make them far more effective than either alone.

Cellulite is thought to be caused by a build up of toxins, causing the connective tissue between the skin and fat layer to become misshapen. This causes the lumpy appearance over thighs, buttocks and stomach. Diet and exercise help but are often not enough to combat the appearance of cellulite as it doesn't just occur in the overweight, but even people who are considered at an ideal weight.

Massage helps cellulite in several ways, by improving skin elasticity, increasing circulation to the area, boosting metabolism to help eliminate toxins and by decreasing fluid retention.

By increasing the circulation to the troubled area, toxins are eliminated from the body faster, helping with cellulite by reducing their build up. Massage relaxes the muscles of the area, allowing for more blood flow which in turn is responsible for helping the body rid itself of toxins.

Another way the body rids itself of toxins is though the lymphatic system, a system that helps the body with fluids right under the skin. These fluids are responsible for carrying toxins away from areas but often get blocked or slowed down. Massage helps give the lymphatic system a boost, stimulating it to drain toxins and any accumulated fluid in the area.

Massage can be done for cellulite with a regular lotion or used with creams or oils specifically for fighting cellulite. When doing massage to help cellulite, always massage in the direction of the heart, pushing fluids and toxins toward the elimination system. Combine light strokes and heavier strokes to stimulate both the muscles and the lymphatic system as the muscles are deeper than the lymphatic system.

There are any number of tools made specifically for cellulite massage. These aren't needed but can be of some assistance when trying to get to hard to reach body parts. Be cautious not to over massage the areas, especially when using any tools for assistance. This should not be painful but instead be very pleasant.

Massage is one of the most basic treatments than can be done to combat cellulite, but it's also one of the most effective. When used as part of your daily cellulite removal routine, it will help you see results faster.

Cellulite is a serious skin disease. It is often recommended to use a proper guideline for curing cellulite.

8 Easy Steps to the Perfect Foot Massage

Just about everybody I have ever met loves having their feet massaged! In some cultures, foot massage is considered a medical therapy. In all cultures, it is considered a wonderful indulgence!

Why does foot massage feel so good? Reflexologists believe it's because different areas of the foot are connected to different areas of the body. As such, a reflexology practitioner believes they can treat your entire body through a well administered foot massage.

Here are some simple steps to help you give a great home foot massage:

Step 1. Make sure your "patient" or friend feels completely comfortable and relaxed. Arrange the right chair or bed until they feel able to sit or lie comfortably for at least 30 minutes.

Step 2. Soak the feet in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes. Feel free to add some fragrant essential oils for an aroma therapeutic benefit.

Step 3. Apply a lubricant. (Note: if your patient has sensitive skin, or prefers not to use a lubricant, that's OK. A lubricant simply makes the massage easier to complete). Use the cream, lotion or oil of your choice. Do not apply it directly to the foot. Instead, apply it to your hands first and rub it between your hands to warm the lubricant before placing your hands onto your patient's foot.

Step 4. Begin at the top of the foot. Now, use a gentle, long-stroke style massage from toe up to the angle. be sure to work gently along the instep. Next, work on the sole of the foot. Make small circles with your fingers or thumb and increase the pressure gradually. Always ask your friend how they are feeling to check if your pressure is too hard or too soft. As you move to the heel and ball of the foot, more pressure may be required. If you get lost at anytime, always remember you are working from toes-to-heel and top-to-bottom. You should also include the sides of the foot, being careful as the sides are often more delicate and sensitive.

Step 5. The next step is to cradle the foot one hand and use your other hand to apply a stretch and flex to your friend's foot. Begin at the ankle, then do the ball. You can repeat this 3 or 4 times and change directions for a full stretch of the foot.

Step 6. Now your attention switches to the sole of the foot. Using your thumbs or knuckles, apply a firm but gentle kneading motion. It is most important that the arch of the foot is your focus.

Step 7. Toes! Beginning with the big toe and working towards the pinky toe, squeeze the toes one at a time and apply small stroking massage to each tow. If your patient likes, you may always massage between each toe. You may also "snap" or "flick" each toe gently, but briskly between your fingers.

Step 8. Complete the foot massage by briefly revisiting the sole of the foot with light, circle strokes. Then bring your hands out and over to make long strokes along the top and instep of the foot. This time work down from the ankle and end at the toes.

That's it! Of course, you need to go ahead and massage the second foot. It's most important that the giver of the massage enjoys the process as much as the receiver. To enhance your own pleasure, make sure you are relaxed and well-hydrated. Playing your favorite music in the background will also make for an enjoyable experience.

Slow Down For a Hot Stone Massage

Life at the 21st century has been define as always trying to keep up with the continuously advancing technology-on the go. Everything can be done with one click of the fingers. Food delivered to your door, piping hot and ready to eat. From shopping online to travels all over the world, partying until the wee hours of the morning and everything else in between, it can be accomplished. Laundry taken care of by someone else and other menial tasks handed to another pair of hands willing to do the job.

The colored and thin glossy plastics have long replaced the green bucks as a means of trade-almost, anyway. There is not enough time to do all the things needed to be done even though all you have to do is work and work some more.

Yet, despite the convenience of the fast pace lifestyle, most of us are ending up burned out, stressed, over fatigue & depressed. In short, physically unfit. Is it because we are struggling to keep up? Or maybe the race not to be left behind is finally taking its toll-we are only humans, after all.

Having said all that, aren't we all grateful for rebirth of the modern day massage therapies? It has always been there all along but we were too occupied to pay attention. And who needs and ancient remedy when medical breakthroughs could not be defined enough and when science has all the answers. We all do, apparently.

What is a massage therapy? It is universal term used for the manipulation of the soft body tissue either by the use of hands, foot or the now becoming more popular hot stone therapy.

There are probably more than 101 reasons to see visit a massage therapist and for those who have not gone to one, do read on, it may be time for you to schedule a visit yourself.

Why visit a massage therapist?

1. Powerful relaxant-no other medicine as natural as a massage can make someone feel invigorated not to mention worry free after spending at least an hour on a massage room. Time and money well spent indeed.

2. Stress-the body can only take so much of stress. When it's too much, it screams to be let go by means of a shoulder, back and chest pain and even lead to ulcer. It lessens body tension and helps in increasing both mental and physical capabilities.

3. Soothing Effects-a good massage is good in calming nerves and muscles which reduces anxiety as it greatly helps in calming one's emotions. The daily rush completely forgotten and it all becomes a total bliss.

4. Detoxification-it is cleaning the body and giving it enough rest which results to rejuvenation resulting to healthier hair & skin not to mention the all over body condition.

5. The healthier option-since it only requires all the natural products of nature to be from the essential oils and the humans' magical touch, the body benefits from it even more.

It doesn't mean though that we need to make an appointment every so often to reap all the benefits a massage therapy entails. We also need to slow down a little. Life isn't a race to the top, it is travelling safely to make sure we get there in due time. But of course, a trip to a massage therapist for a little hot stone massage will not hurt either so slow down.

Back Massage: Learn How

Just imagine being able to offer a back massage to someone who is stressed or suffering from discomfort in their back? Not only can it achieve total relaxation for the patient but also offers the desirable effect of feeling of calmness, both physical and mental. Yet many think that in order to be able to give a back massage they need extensive training. That need not be the case.

By utilising very simple steps, anyone can offer a back massage. It is about understanding the theory and process of massage and then utilising the latent power in the hands to heal, relieve and relax with confidence. The first stage of how to give a back massage can be started by simply placing pressure using both hands on the patient's spine. The technique used here is to gently slide the hands from the bottom of the pelvis following the line of the spine all the way up to the neck. As an addition whilst this is being undertaken, you can introduce a circular motion using your thumbs as this will assist in the massage of the sides of the spine. The process should be continued for several minutes to enusre the muscles around the spine are sufficiently loosened and the blood flow stimulated.

Once this area has been well massaged, it is simply a process of continuing the movement from the bottom of the spine up to the neck but gradually working outwards from the centre, all the time identifying areas of muscle resistance that require additional work. Ensure that the shoulders are also included within this exercise and don't forget to work into the therapy circular movements of the hands to compliment the sliding and thumb movements.

Where stubborn muscle tension is located, utilise the therapeutic capabilities of your fingers and gently place pressure on the muscle and kneed with your fingers in both a clockwise and anti-clockwise direction, manipulating the muscle with stretching movements to encourage enhanced blood flow and unlock the discomfort. Remember, massage does not have to be grand sliding movements up and down the body to achieve the desired results.

A successful back massage will create a sense of deep relaxation and calmness in the patient. The areas of discomfort will have been identified, worked upon and subsequently reduced. Don't forget that it is essential to use good quality massage oils and lotions when undertaking a massage. This allows for the ease of flow of the hands over the skin by reducing friction and hence giving the ability to work deeper into the affected muscles.

Once your understand and have knowledge of the basics of how to give a back massage, you will have a valuable skill that will be in demand. It is not difficult to learn the basic therapy techniques and the rewards for that little effort will not only be felt by the patient but also by you with a sense of real satisfaction in being able to reduce discomfort and enhance wellbeing.

Aromatherapy Massage - A Natural Combination

Aromatherapy massage is a popular form of natural healing work that involves using aromatic essential oils to promote health and well being. The essential oils are usually combined with the massage oil and applied to the skin during the massage. Also a therapist might add the oils to a oil diffuser, that allows the natural fragrance to dissipate throughout the room. Using both techniques, the client gets the double effect of breathing the fragrance as well as absorbing the oils through the skin.

Other ways to receive the benefits of aromatherapy would be adding some drops of oil to a warm bath. A small bowl of hot water could also be used as a steam for inhaling. A few drops could be added to a tissue and held close to your nose and breathed in.Essential oils can also be used in hot or cold compresses and soaks to treat muscle aches and pains (e.g., lavender and ginger) Because of their potency, essential oils are diluted in a carrier oil or lotion before being applied to the skin. How Can You Benefit From Apricot Massage Oil?

As a masseuse, you are always looking for new massage oils that can benefit your clients. One of the better options you have to choose from today is apricot massage oil. There are countless benefits to the skin and for relaxation purposes that you can get from apricot oil. Here is a little information to help you better understand this oil.

Apricot massage oil is cold-pressed from the seed of apricot fruit. While it has been found to be great for baking, it is even better for skincare. Many skincare specialists live by the motto that if it is healthy to eat than it is good to put on the skin as well. This kind of oil is similar to almond oil in that it has a sweet and bitter taste.

The reason this oil is so ideal for skincare is because it is a tremendous carrier oil. Carrier oil is typically used as a base with other oils and is frequently found with aromatherapy oils to make it easer to spread on the skin. Because apricot massage oil is so light, it is easily absorbed into the skin without greasing up your client.

Not only does it make things easy on you as the masseuse, but it can benefit the client as well. It has been found to be perfect for people with minor skin conditions like eczema. It is also ideal for people with sensitive skin and older people.

Apricot oil contains a number of different things including fatty acids, oleic, linoleic, and vitamins A and E. The vitamins that are within this oil help sooth skin conditions by providing moisture, thus reducing those age marks. It is also beneficial with providing flexibility and moisture into the skin if your skin has been dehydrated.

Outside of the apricot massage oil, you can find this type of oil in several different skincare items as well. Some of the common skincare products that contain this oil include lotions, creams and soaps. There are several different kinds of apricot oils which can make it difficult to tell the difference from one another. Just know that the best are rich in scent and color.

As you can see, there are a number of benefits to apricot oil in regards to skin conditions and massage therapy. If you are a masseuse, this is the perfect oil to use during your sessions. It will help your client's skin, leave them feeling calm and refreshed, and will do so without leaving a greasy sloppy mess.

The Miracle of Therapeutic Massage

When muscles ache and backs give out, there are many different approaches towards healing and treatment that doctors may recommend. But, you really don not need a physician to tell you that massage is a beneficial course of action to aid in a multitude of ailments, conditions and diseases.

Throughout the years and across numerous cultures, massage has been highly regarded as a positive aid in the maintenance and achievement of better health. Although a wide range of options are available to choose from, there are various techniques and methods that will provide the best results on an individual basis.

When receiving a massage from a well-trained professional, you will encounter a set of hands that have been molded into sturdy tools of health. It is the job of the massager to promote the wellness of a client. The healing properties of a therapeutic massage are undeniable. Offering relief from a variety of ailments, from poor circulation to a muscle tear, it can be found in spas, resorts, rehabilitation clinics and doctor offices. It is such a popular form of stress relief and healing that many people offer therapeutic massage in private settings, such as sessions given in the home.

Why Therapeutic Massage?

One of the main reasons a client may seek out massage is to achieve relief from a pain in a specific part of the body or to eliminate the effects of something causing discomfort in the body. But, there are many different benefits that a client may receive from having a massage. Therapeutic massage increases the range of motion associated with various joints, as well as speeds up the recovery time from overexertion in physical activity.

Have trouble sleeping? Massage can help. Slumping too much? Therapeutic massage improves posture. Suffer from high blood pressure? This type of massage has been known to reduce high blood pressure levels. Have a big test or job interview coming up? Massage can improve concentration and help people to focus better. Overall, therapeutic massage encourages and promotes an increased feeling of wellness and calm.

Massage Services

When visiting a spa or massage clinic, you will encounter an array of exhilarating options to help ease your tension and relax your muscles. For instance, aromatherapy can be used in therapeutic massage to intensify the stress-reducing properties of the practice. Essential oils are slathered on the skin during the massage, promoting increased detoxification and tension relief. While lying on a table is considered quite a common practice in giving and receiving a massage, there is also a therapeutic massage approach that is given in a chair. While the fully clothed, the client sits in a special massage chair, their shoulders, arms, neck, upper back and head receive attention.

Sometimes, a therapeutic massage uses heated lava rocks to increase circulation, as well as treat joints and tendons. There is even therapeutic massage that provides a wealth of relief to a pregnant woman. Two different kinds of massage exist in this category of relief. Throughout the nine months of pregnancy, there are therapeutic massage techniques that allow a client to relax and get relief from some of the common discomforts associated with this important milestone. The second selection in pregnancy massage helps women when they are experiencing labor. Various techniques and positions are used to provide comfort throughout this trying process.

For those who suffer from chronic muscle tension, a deep tissue massage may be chosen. Slow strokes and increased direct pressure and/or friction characterize this type of massage. The hands run across the grain of the muscles in such a way that promotes enhanced relaxation and tension relief.

Two types of popular massage you may encounter include Swedish and Shiatsu techniques. Swedish massage provides relaxation through a mixture of long, light strokes, coupled with kneading techniques. This type of massage is good for the elimination of toxins, increased circulation, decrease in muscle tension and a noticeable boost in the immune system. Shiatsu massage, which originates from Chinese health treatments, involves the stretching, rubbing, chopping and massaging of the body.

What Else Can Therapeutic Massage Do For Me?

Besides easing the aches and pains associated with tight, swollen and rundown muscles, there are numerous benefits that a client can enjoy. Below is a brief mention of some of the positive results that come from therapeutic massage:

Relieve Stress & Achieve Relaxation: When muscle tissue is transferred from a position of contraction, relaxation is achieved. The movement of blood throughout the body encourages this relaxed state.

Medical Massage: Massage aids in the treatment of a variety of health problems that could slow up daily activities with painful and stressful ailments. It is often used to treat back problems, as well as straighten out kinked nerves. Varicose ulcers, strained bowel movements and muscular atrophy can also be treated with therapeutic massage.

Aid Sports-Related Injuries: Whether you are nursing a healing broken bone or dealing with chronic strains and sprains, therapeutic massage can provide relief. The pain and inflammation attached to these sports-related injuries can be eased with the techniques of this kind of massage. Therapeutic massage not only helps weak or injured body parts, but also makes the healthy ones even stronger.

Treat Disease: When suffering from a serious disease or chronic condition, therapeutic massage, when properly administered, is rather beneficial. This is especially true when it comes to diabetic patients. Not only can diabetic clients achieve relaxation through massage, but it also improves poor circulation that often leads to serious complications with the disease. Massage especially provides much-needed relief to the hands and feet of those suffering from diabetes.

Tone the Body: Whether you are trying to lose weight or working on improving the overall appearance of your physique, you will find that therapeutic massage aids in the quest of a better body. Muscles become more toned and the increase in circulation allows harmful toxins and chemicals to flow away from vital body parts. Improved range-of-motion, as well as increased flexibility is also a welcome outcome associated with therapeutic massage.

Spa Relaxation - Erase the Stress

Stress -- we have all heard about it, and felt it at one time or another in our lives. So how do we get relief from stress? Spa salons offer a very relaxing atmosphere in which this is achieved. One such stress relieving treatment is massage. There are several different types of massage. A full body massage is very relaxing. You are taken into a changing room and given a robe. When you enter the massage room, the masseuse should talk to you about the type of massage you would like and if there are any health conditions to be considered. This way the masseuse will know what type of massage is right for you.

For a full body massage, the masseuse will start at the arms working their way to the shoulders and back area, down the legs ending at the feet. The lights will be dimmed and there will be soft music playing if you wish. Aromatherapy oils are used to achieve a more relaxing scent and to make help the hands glide over the skin in a more comfortable manner. If you have allergic reaction to certain types of oils let your masseuse know ahead of time. Most masseuses do not talk during a massage so their client can relax completely. If at anytime you have pain during the massage tell your masseuse.

There are many types of massages to achieve the relaxation you need. Hot stones are another type of relaxing massage. Facials are very relaxing as is Reiki, which is energy based massage. You will enter the salon stressed and tense, but you will leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. You will feel years younger and have more energy than when you first entered. Many different salons offer different treatments for relaxing. Check them out and don't be afraid to ask about the types of massages they offer. After your fist time at a massage salon you will feel so good you will wonder why you have never gone before and make another appointment for the next time.

Not only do massage salons offer different types of massage. Some also offer alternative ways to relax. One alternative way to relax is called aromatherapy. There are different scents that will relax your mind and with it your body. The scents that are most commonly used are called lavender and chamomile. These herbs have qualities that when used in oils or candles give off a calming or relaxing aroma. Soft music is another alternative way to relax. When the lights are dimmed, try putting on soft flute music or any music instrument of your choice. This is very calming for the soul and frees the mind. There are many ways to leave stress behind, relax and feel rejuvenated. Try some or all of these. There is one out there just for you.

Massage Techniques Can Be Used at Home to Benefit Your Family

Massage therapy has been practised for thousands of years. Massage techniques have been widely used in Chinese medicine for many years and have been documented as far back as ancient Greece and Persia. The healing benefits associated with massage have been well documented throughout time.

Today, massage remains based on the ancient techniques used centuries ago to drive out pain from the body and promote well-being. Massage is used for a variety of benefits but the general benefits to using massage include increased energy levels, improved circulation and lymphatic drainage, promoting the healing of injuries, alleviating stress and combating insomnia.

Many variations of massage are practiced all over the world. Massage can also be broken down to focus on one particular area of the body. This can include a massage concentrating on the muscles of the upper and lower body, head and scalp massages and the newer technique of facial massage.

Most of us have at some point in our lives experienced the calm serenity that a massage can bring. Massage is the perfect way to pamper yourself or to provide a loved one with a completely relaxing experience. By learning how to massage at home, you can develop the skills needed to promote an increased well-being in your family members, friends and loved ones.

Fortunately, learning how to massage at home is something that can be achieved very easily. One of the most important factors in a beneficial massage, both to the giver and the receiver, is that the environment in which the massage is carried out is one of complete comfort and tranquillity. The greatest results will be achieved if the body and mind are completely at ease.

Before commencing any massage treatment, ensure you have located a peaceful area at home where there will be no disturbances.Once you have located a quiet area in which to carry out the treatment, and you or the person receiving the massage is comfortable then the massage can begin.

It is recommended in most massage practise to use a little massage oil on the hands to ensure smooth movements and strokes. The type of oil used will vary depending on the desired benefit of the massage. Many oils promote a sense of calming and relaxation, whilst if the massage is to promote healing of an injury a more specific oil may be used to ease the muscle or affected body part. Make sure your hands are warm by rubbing them vigorously together then apply the oil or lotion to your hands and then begin to work on the desired area.

Massage techniques can vary widely depending on the desired outcome. For babies and children, the techniques will be lighter and in most circumstances only the finger tips will be used with light pressure. For a relaxation massage, the movements will of medium to light pressure with calming strokes and techniques and can cover the entire body. For sport injuries and muscle problems, where a deeper part of the muscle needs to be reached, the movements are more firm and concentrated on the specific target area.

Massage is recognized world wide as a healing therapy and its popularity is increasing rapidly. New techniques are continually being introduced to the Western world, and along with these come many new benefits and results. More and more people are learning this great skill at home, so that they have the resources to enrich the lives of not only those around them but also themselves throughout complete relaxation of mind and body.

Creating Environment For a Soothing Massage

A massage is the unsurpassed solution to a person's weariness. No other method can be as good as providing a massage. Getting a good massage is bliss for the receiver. It can provide mental as well as physical peace to a person if provided in the right type of environment. Creating a good mood is very important for the person undergoing the treatment. If the person getting the massage is not finding pleasure, then it is waste of time both for the receiver and the masseur.

For a suitable surrounding, you need a few objects. Here is a vivid description of a few of them:

1. Music: The first and the foremost thing that is required to create a mood is the music. You need to play some soft and relaxing music while massaging a person. This enhances the effect and provides great mental satisfaction to the receiver. It is a better idea to play music that will be liked by the person experiencing the massage. Music has always been the most widely accepted form of relaxation since a long time. Thus, if you play some sort of good music definitely the massage can be enjoyed as well as benefitted more by the receiver.

2. Candles: The second major item needed to create the mood of the receiver is the candles. Candles that provide a favorable aroma are liked by people. You can choose various candles like lavender, rose, jasmine or any other favorite smell of the person receiving the massage. A sweet odor also helps in providing mental tranquility to the receiver.

3. Flowers: You can also place flowers in the room where you provide massage to people. The sweet smell of flowers diverts the attention of the people receiving the massage from their daily tensions to serenity and spirituality.

4. Oils: The other important object required for the massage is the massage oil. It helps in reducing the friction between the hands of the masseur and the body of the receiver. Massage oils that provide some benefit to the body of the receiver are always the best choice. You can opt for almond oil or jojoba oil. Other varieties are also available in the market these days.

5. Towels: The next necessary requirement is the towel. You require at least two big towels for the massage. One should be placed under the person getting the massage and one on top of him to hide certain unclothed parts of his body. You should make the towels warm to provide warmth to the receiver of the massage.

6. Books or video: This is basically for the beginners. If you do not have the exact idea of the steps to be followed, then you should buy a good book or a video to learn the accurate steps for the massage. You can also take help from the online sites available for the purpose.

7. Lights: The lights of the room where the massage is under progress should not be too bright. The lights should be kept dim, to make the person feel more comfortable and warm. Bright lights tend to irritate the eyes of the person taking the massage.

Swedish Massage and Indian Head Massage

Swedish Massage
Swedish massage was originally devised over a hundred years ago in a gymnasium in Stockholm to support the performance of gymnasts. It drew on influences as diverse as ancient Greek and Chinese massage therapy. It formed the basis of physiotherapy massage and underpins many modern styles of massage such as Sports massage and aromatherapy massage.

The Benefits of Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is highly adaptable. It can be used in a gentle way, with long flowing strokes (effleurage) which relax the client and warm the skin and muscles. Such a gentle style is often used with aromatherapy, enabling the essential oils to penetrate the skin, and to promote stress relief. Firmer pressures of various styles can also be applied to muscle 'knots' (petrissage) which can relieve muscle tension and modules caused by sport or being deskbound. Finally tapotement e.g. 'hacking' can be used to further disperse knots and increase the circulation. Swedish massage therefore has a powerful ability to relax the mind and deal with stress, for some individuals in an even more powerful way than talking therapy. It also can improve the condition of muscles, joints and skin and can aid detoxing through the increased circulation of blood and lymph. In this way it can help with the dispersal of cellulite, for example. The comfort of the client is ensured throughout by being wrapped in large, soft towels, only exposing the area of the body to be worked on. Treatments are usually 40, 60 or 90 minutes long and focus on areas of importance to the client.

Indian Head Massage, a Brief History
IHM was developed in India over a thousand years ago. It is very much an integrated part of Indian culture, being performed within families, at markets, on the beach and of course in barbers and hairdressing shops. Many Indian people consider IHM as an important part of preserving the colour and condition of their long, dark hair. It also uses pressure (marma) points and oils related to traditional Indian holistic medicine, ayerveda, so can have a pronounced therapeutic effect.

Indian Head Massage, the benefits
IHM in the west combines many of the moves discovered throughout India to benefit the head, neck, upper back and arm areas. It is performed clothed and in a chair so is convenient and portable. It can promote physical improvements to the areas addressed e.g. neck and shoulder tension. It can also promote powerful psychological benefits such as improved sleep, emotional balance, calm, focus, relief from headaches and uplift. It achieves this through the rebalancing of energy (the upper three chakras) and working on the numerous pressure points located in the head area.

Massage Oils - How to Make a Perfect Blend

Massage oils are a great way to enhance the beneficial effects of a massage therapy, they are looked as a must for a massage therapy session. The massage techniques have evolved in order to accommodate the use of oils. Choosing the right products, making a good blend that doesn't spoil in time might be a difficult task without the proper information.

There are a few reasons for using oils in a massage: facilitate the gliding over the skin thus avoiding superficial irritation, nourish the patient skin and promote health and absorption of the essential oils through skin and lungs.

A massage oil is usually a combination of two or more oils. The combination contains at least a base oil, the carrier, and one or more essential oils (aromatic oils). The base is an oil with a high skin penetration potential. The essential oil is chosen for its therapeutic effects and it is based on patient's need.

The carrier is a vegetable oil. When buying a carrier we have to search for cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils. These two extraction methods ensure the oil is not polluted with solvents and is not degraded by high temperatures processing.

Most of the carrier oils can be stored in the sealed bottle for long periods. Once in contact with the air it starts the oxidation. If kept in dark containers at low temperatures the oxidation is slowed down. However some oils will deteriorate if stored in the fridge, check with the producer the proper storage conditions.

The most popular carrier oils are Grape-seed oil and Sweet Almond oil. Grape-seed oil is a very light oil and is very easy absorbed by the skin. Sweet Almond oil is very reach in vitamins with high therapeutic value.

Another excellent base is Olive oil because of its therapeutic qualities but is not very popular because of its strong fragrance.

Some other great base oils are: Apricot kernel, Avocado, Jojoba, Coconut, Hazelnut, Peach kernel, Sunflower.

Wheat-germ oil is an excellent adjuvant to any base because of its antioxidant properties. Wheat-germs oil added in proportion of 15% to any other base will prevent it to go rancid. Wheat-germs oil is a sticky oil so use it cautiously in your combinations.

The aromatic oils are plant extracts, (from flowers, roots, seeds, etc), with therapeutic properties. The aromatic oils are very concentrated and they are only used in combination with a base. The concentration should be about 3% essential oil in a base. Adding too much aromatic oil could irritate the patient skin as some of these are very potent.

Most of the aromatic oils are volatile, some of them will simply disappear in minutes if you forget the container open. As a general rule you have to keep them in sealed dark containers at low temperatures.

Each essential oil has its own healing properties. It is very important to know what these properties are in order to avoid harm. Using them improperly could worsen certain conditions.

Buying essential oils is a difficult task because of the lack of regulation in the industry. Very often your aromatherapy oils contain chemicals, fragrance enhancers, solvents to multiply the content, or oils extracted from similar plants but with different properties. None of these are marked on the bottle.

You can follow these guidelines when you are buying essential oils:

  • Look for therapeutic-grade oils, sometimes it's marked on the bottle;
  • Look for the scientific name of the plant, as sometimes the same common name of a plant could cover different botanical varieties;
  • Check if the plants were grown organically or wild-crafted - these are the best plants.
  • Check the reputability of the producer and question your supplier about their products.
  • Know that aromatherapy oils are not essential oils. Aromatherapy oils are usually a blend of essential and carrier oils or other components.

Use your smell, sometimes you can detect a problem product only by smelling it.Some excellent essential oils and their properties are:
Chamomile - anti-inflammatory and sedative,
Eucalyptus - respiratory problems, flu, skin infections;
Frankincense - helps the intellect;
Lavender - good sedative, heals burns, mood enhancer;
Lemon - antiseptic, lowers blood pressure and good for skin conditions; it is extremely volatile;
Peppermint - digestion, flatulence, flu;
Pine - antiseptic, very effective treating respiratory problems;
Rose - aphrodisiac and mood enhancer, very expensive oil.

When you blend your massage oil take in consideration the following facts:

  • Carrier oils go rancid and essential oil oxidize so make only what you use.
  • Massage oil has to be warm when you use it that will accelerate the alteration of your blend.
  • Your clients are different and have different needs, ask them what they like. Get feedback about the oil you use on your patient and don't use the same blend on all your clients.
  • Never use mineral oils, they are not absorbed by the skin and sometimes they can be harmful.
  • Do not use more than 3% to 4% of essential oil in your blend.
  • Avoid pre-blended massage oils if you are not sure about the date of fabrication, and exact content.
  • Avoid blending too many oils, simple is more effective.

Every person has their own preferences when it comes to essential oils, and that is based on their affinities and needs. Show your patient a sample of oil each time they come for a massage and note in their file what they like most.

My personal favorites are Frankincense, Lemon and Lavender. Frankincense has an important spiritual component while Lemon oil creates an oasis of freshness and intensifies all your senses. Lavender creates invisible bonds between people of opposite sex.

Learn About Hot Stone Massages

There are plenty of massage types including Swedish, Thai, aromatherapy, deep tissue, reflexology. Even though there are many choices, hot stone therapy is one of the most popular methods. Many people are choosing the hot stone therapy option and its popularity is quickly rising and more and more therapists are offering this option.

This type of therapy involves placing heated basalt stones on key parts of the body to help you relax and release muscular tension. The stones are composed with mainly silica with traces of irons which allows the stones to retain the heat very well. The heated stones work by transferring heat to the body creating a deep tissue effect. The heat of the stones warms the skin, which allows for the absorption of moisturizing and therapeutic oils, while simultaneously preparing the musculature of the body so the therapist can work into the deeper muscle layers.

The main reasons people choose this therapy is to loosen muscles, relax, feel energized, and experience increased local circulation.

It also works wonders for people with with a wide variety of health conditions. People with headaches, carpal tunnel, back problems, and plantar fasciatis all use hot stone therapy for treatment.

Another one of the reasons for the popularity of this massage is that it requires minimal contact with the therapist since all the work is being done by the stones themselves.

One hour sessions usually cost around fifty dollars. Remember this type of treatment is all natural and is available by most therapists.
