Easy Aromatherapy Massage Recipes You Can Make in Minutes

There's nothing like an aromatherapy massage to cure what ails you. Or at least make the bad stuff go away for awhile. Life is so challenging these days, we all need to take time out to de-stress both mentally and physically.

Massage is one of the best ways to relieve stress because it promotes deep relaxation while at the same time satisfying our need for caring, nurturing touch. Research shows that massage reduces anxiety, tension, depression and pain. And it increases relaxation, healthy mental alertness, creativity and general well-being. It even strengthens your immune system!

When you combine massage with aromatherapy, you radically increase its effect. Essential oils are powerful substances that promote healing on many levels - immune-boosting, nerve-calming, muscle-relaxing and hormone-balancing to name just a few... the list goes on.

Just for fun, try this experiment: Get a massage using an unscented massage oil, either professionally or from a partner. Then get an aromatherapy massage using one of the recipes below. Note: If you buy massage oil, make sure it's made with pure, natural essential oils - not synthetic fragrance oil. See which type of massage is more relaxing.

With just a few simple ingredients, you can easily make your own aromatherapy massage oil blend. And with these easy aromatherapy massage recipes, you can have (or give) a massage any time you like, in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Here are a few quick, easy-to-make aromatherapy massage recipes to get you started. Don't be afraid to use essential oils you really love - often, if you're especially drawn to a scent it's because your body needs something it provides (hormone balancing, for instance!)

One note of caution: Before using any essential oils, do your research! Essential oils are powerful substances and should be treated with respect. Pregnant women need to be especially careful about using essential oils in aromatherapy massage; in fact, it's recommended that they not apply essential oils to the skin at all during the first trimester.

That said, on to the recipes... Here we go!

Relaxing Lavender Aromatherapy Massage Oil Blend

This floral lavender aromatherapy massage oil blend relaxes you inside and out. It works on your nerves, muscles and hormones to soothe, calm and sedate. A perfect night-time massage, especially if you have insomnia! Note: Omit the chamomile if you're allergic to ragweed.

  • 24 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 4 drops Rosewood essential oil
  • 1 drop Rose Geranium essential oil
  • 1 drop Chamomile essential oil
  • 4 tablespoons (60ml) Apricot Kernel or Grapeseed oil

Sensual Sandalwood Aromatherapy Massage Oil Blend

This spicy, sensual aromatherapy massage oil blend warms you up in the very best way! Its soothing yet spicy scent lifts your mood while at the same time easing your tight, stressed-out nerves. You're left feeling warm, relaxed and receptive. Enjoy!

  • 22 drops Sandalwood essential oil
  • 5 drops Sweet Orange essential oil
  • 1 drop Patchouli essential oil
  • 1 drop Ylang Ylang essential oil
  • 1 drop Ginger essential oil
  • 4 tablespoons (60ml) Apricot Kernel or Grapeseed oil

Caution: Sweet Orange essential oil can cause photo-sensitivity and sunburn. Do not use before sun exposure. Ginger may irritate sensitive skin, which is why it's at such a low concentration. If you're exceptionally sensitive, leave it out.

Sweet Citrus Aromatherapy Massage Oil Blend

This happy aromatherapy massage oil blend has a sweet-tart, fruity citrus scent that's sure to cheer you up. Citrus oils are especially good for lifting your spirits while at the same time taking the edge off your raw, buzzing nerves. Use it when you're cranky or miserably stressed - the combination of oil and touch is magical!

  • 14 drops Bergamot essential oil
  • 10 drops Grapefruit essential oil
  • 5 drops Palmarosa essential oil
  • 1 drop Ylang Ylang essential oil
  • 4 tablespoons (60ml) Apricot Kernel or Grapeseed oil

Caution: Bergamot and grapefruit essential oils can cause photo-sensitivity and sunburn. Do not use before sun exposure.

Method:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a dark glass or PET plastic bottle. (I suggest using one with an oil or lotion dispenser cap to prevent spillage.)
  2. Wait at least 24 hours after blending to let the aromas 'cure'. Remember to keep the bottle in a cool, dark place. Use within three months.

That's it -it's that simple! You'll spend about five minutes preparing your blend... and much longer enjoying it!

Massage Oil For Massage Therapy

Massage oil is a great addition to any massage experience. It enhances not only the relaxing nature of the massage therapy session, but also adds to the healing benefits of the massage.

The use of massage oil is not a new idea. Homer, Plato, Socrates – all of these men referenced the use of massage oil as an aid for pain relief in their writings. Today, pain relief is one reason for using massage oil. Others include the facilitation of more gliding massage, skin nourishment, and the promotion of good health in general.

How do you choose a massage oil for massage therapy? First, choose an oil that is cold-pressed or expeller-pressed. Both of these have had the least amount of processing and will last longest. Prevent them from spoiling by keeping them in a cool place and adding 300 IUs of vitamin E per pint of oil monthly. In addition, essential oils, or oils that are distilled from various plants, roots, or seeds) can be added. Seek the aid of a professional to advise on a good combination.

Some oils to choose from for massage therapy include:

* Sweet almond oil – Anti-inflammatory, light, and good for most skin types, especially dry skin.

* Apricot kernel oil – Reduces stress, provides balance, and good for all skin types, especially prematurely aging skin.

* Avocado oil – This is a heavy oil best diluted at a rate of 10% in a lighter oil.

* Borage oil – Good for eczema and psoriasis, it penetrates, regenerates, and stimulates.

* Castor oil – A thick sticky oil good for drawing out toxins and for use on scar tissue. Best used in a poultice.

* Coconut oil – A thick, heavy oil that should be warmed before use. Good for cracked skin.

* Emu oil – Anti-inflammatory and used for arthritis, sore muscles, bruising, and eczema. May block pores.

* Grapeseed oil – Non-allergenic and good for all types of skin.

* Jojoba oil – A penetrating, anti-bacterial oil for eczema and acne.

* Kukui nut oil – Anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory that is light and has a slight warming effect.

* Olive oil – Has a warming effect and relieves stiffness.

Different skin types will fare better with different types of oil. As such, it will be a good idea to experiment with different kinds for massage therapy. If one doesn't work, try another. Also, some may personally prefer the smell or the effects of one massage oil to another. The selection of massage oils is pretty wide; so there is bound to be a preferred one for just about anybody.

Massage Oils - How to Make a Perfect Blend

Massage oils are a great way to enhance the beneficial effects of a massage therapy, they are looked as a must for a massage therapy session. The massage techniques have evolved in order to accommodate the use of oils. Choosing the right products, making a good blend that doesn't spoil in time might be a difficult task without the proper information.

There are a few reasons for using oils in a massage: facilitate the gliding over the skin thus avoiding superficial irritation, nourish the patient skin and promote health and absorption of the essential oils through skin and lungs.

A massage oil is usually a combination of two or more oils. The combination contains at least a base oil, the carrier, and one or more essential oils (aromatic oils). The base is an oil with a high skin penetration potential. The essential oil is chosen for its therapeutic effects and it is based on patient's need.

The carrier is a vegetable oil. When buying a carrier we have to search for cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils. These two extraction methods ensure the oil is not polluted with solvents and is not degraded by high temperatures processing.

Most of the carrier oils can be stored in the sealed bottle for long periods. Once in contact with the air it starts the oxidation. If kept in dark containers at low temperatures the oxidation is slowed down. However some oils will deteriorate if stored in the fridge, check with the producer the proper storage conditions.

The most popular carrier oils are Grape-seed oil and Sweet Almond oil. Grape-seed oil is a very light oil and is very easy absorbed by the skin. Sweet Almond oil is very reach in vitamins with high therapeutic value.

Another excellent base is Olive oil because of its therapeutic qualities but is not very popular because of its strong fragrance.

Some other great base oils are: Apricot kernel, Avocado, Jojoba, Coconut, Hazelnut, Peach kernel, Sunflower.

Wheat-germ oil is an excellent adjuvant to any base because of its antioxidant properties. Wheat-germs oil added in proportion of 15% to any other base will prevent it to go rancid. Wheat-germs oil is a sticky oil so use it cautiously in your combinations.

The aromatic oils are plant extracts, (from flowers, roots, seeds, etc), with therapeutic properties. The aromatic oils are very concentrated and they are only used in combination with a base. The concentration should be about 3% essential oil in a base. Adding too much aromatic oil could irritate the patient skin as some of these are very potent.

Most of the aromatic oils are volatile, some of them will simply disappear in minutes if you forget the container open. As a general rule you have to keep them in sealed dark containers at low temperatures.

Each essential oil has its own healing properties. It is very important to know what these properties are in order to avoid harm. Using them improperly could worsen certain conditions.

Buying essential oils is a difficult task because of the lack of regulation in the industry. Very often your aromatherapy oils contain chemicals, fragrance enhancers, solvents to multiply the content, or oils extracted from similar plants but with different properties. None of these are marked on the bottle.

You can follow these guidelines when you are buying essential oils:

  • Look for therapeutic-grade oils, sometimes it's marked on the bottle;
  • Look for the scientific name of the plant, as sometimes the same common name of a plant could cover different botanical varieties;
  • Check if the plants were grown organically or wild-crafted - these are the best plants.
  • Check the reputability of the producer and question your supplier about their products.
  • Know that aromatherapy oils are not essential oils. Aromatherapy oils are usually a blend of essential and carrier oils or other components.

Use your smell, sometimes you can detect a problem product only by smelling it.Some excellent essential oils and their properties are:
Chamomile - anti-inflammatory and sedative,
Eucalyptus - respiratory problems, flu, skin infections;
Frankincense - helps the intellect;
Lavender - good sedative, heals burns, mood enhancer;
Lemon - antiseptic, lowers blood pressure and good for skin conditions; it is extremely volatile;
Peppermint - digestion, flatulence, flu;
Pine - antiseptic, very effective treating respiratory problems;
Rose - aphrodisiac and mood enhancer, very expensive oil.

When you blend your massage oil take in consideration the following facts:

  • Carrier oils go rancid and essential oil oxidize so make only what you use.
  • Massage oil has to be warm when you use it that will accelerate the alteration of your blend.
  • Your clients are different and have different needs, ask them what they like. Get feedback about the oil you use on your patient and don't use the same blend on all your clients.
  • Never use mineral oils, they are not absorbed by the skin and sometimes they can be harmful.
  • Do not use more than 3% to 4% of essential oil in your blend.
  • Avoid pre-blended massage oils if you are not sure about the date of fabrication, and exact content.
  • Avoid blending too many oils, simple is more effective.

Every person has their own preferences when it comes to essential oils, and that is based on their affinities and needs. Show your patient a sample of oil each time they come for a massage and note in their file what they like most.

My personal favorites are Frankincense, Lemon and Lavender. Frankincense has an important spiritual component while Lemon oil creates an oasis of freshness and intensifies all your senses. Lavender creates invisible bonds between people of opposite sex.

Massage Oil Is A Must For The Ultimate Full Body Massage

If you’ve ever had a full body massage, you will know that masseuses usually use massage oil to perform the various techniques they use to relax you and to perform a great body massage. Using massage oil is a must if the masseuse hopes to dig deep into the muscle and ligament without causing undue discomfort. This is because using massage oil makes the hands slippery, which reduces the friction and chances of getting skin burn as the masseuse works his or her magic on your tired body.

Various Massage Oil Scents Are Available

Massage oil comes in a variety of scents, some scents are tailored towards a totally relaxing experience, which makes for a great full body massage. If you’ve never had a massage before using one of the scented oils, ask your masseuse to use it on you the enxt time you get a body massage. You will love the way the various scents as it relaxes all your muscles and, essentially, take you to another place.

However, the massage oil does not need to be scented in order for it to work. All you have to do is to feel the masseuses well oiled hands on your skin and tired muscles to tell how effective using massage oil truly is. There is no discomfort as the masseuse slides his or her hands over your muscles, digging in deep to get out any tight knots that may have formed from stress.

Stress can cause all sorts of problems if leaves untreated. There are many ways to relieve stress, but a good body massage is still one of the best. It’s relaxing, for one, and it’s almost as if you are king or queen for a day, or an hour at the very least. There’s nothing else like having a great body massage. So, if you feel stressed, go schedule an appointment with a masseuse today. Most charge by the hour and the rates vary so make sure you shop around for a good deal. The best way to find a reliable masseuse is to ask your friends or coworkers to recommend one.

Let’s face it, we live in a very stressful times. Everyone experiences stress at some point in their lives and a massage with massage oil is the perfect way to relieve that body and mental stress. If you’ve never had a massage before, you should schedule one today. When you’re in the room with the masseuse, ask them if you can have scented massage oil for the body treatment. If not, ask them if they offer various massage oils. They will explain what each oil does and, when they finally get to work, you’ll have a chance to finally relax your tired body and you’ll never want another massage unless they are using your favorite massage oil.

Massaging Oils - The Smooth Secret to Better Massage

So you read a book on Massage and you're ready to try it out tonight on your girlfriend. The techniques are fresh in your mind and you want to do a good job to help your partner relax a little. Well, there is something else you should do first. You should get a selection of Massaging oils ready to use. If you haven't used them before, don't worry, it's not that hard to find them. If you are lucky, and live in a large metropolitan area, go to the large retail stores like Wal-Mart or K-Mart perhaps. Sometimes they have pre-mixed oils for massage. If not, they have a selection of fragrances and essential oils in the Women's Department. Try something you like. You can make your own massage oils by using an essential oil to add scent to your base massaging oil. There are two kinds of oils commonly used in Massage.

The first kind is a mineral oil. These oils are readily available at large Drug Stores. The other kind, my personal favorite, is a regular vegetable oil. Take your pick of olive oil, safflower oil, whichever you feel the most comfortable with. My favorite is safflower oil. To give it a scent, I get oil of clove from my local CVS drug store. But you can use any scent that you like . Some suggestions are Patchouli oil, Cinnamon oil or a delightful one from India, I think. It's called Frangipani. Go to the Cosmetics area of the big Drug Stores and get a few plastic squeeze bottles with a narrow hole on top. Use these to dispense the oil into your hands. You should never, as a rule, squirt the oil directly on your partner. Always put it in your palm, first. Then rub your hands together a few times to spread the oil and to warm it up. You want this to be a sensory experience to remember, not a shock.

Now that you have your oils prepared. There are a few tips to mention here. If you are doing a whole body massage and will use a lot of oil, then it's a good idea to prepare two bottles of oil for each of the scents you have chosen. The reason? well, think about it. If you are moving back and forth over a large area, as you do with a whole body massage, you will save unneccesary going back and forth trying to get the bottle that somehow is always at the other end of your partner. When you start a massage, you should try to maintain contact with your partner all the way through the massage. If you have to stop to get the bottle, it can be awkward and sometimes unsettling. So use two of each to prevent that. Also, don't use too much oil at once. A teaspoon at a time should be enough for a fairly large spot to massage. If you need more, like for example, massaging a hairy back or chest, apply more in small amounts. There should not be any pooling of oil on the one being massaged. Don't pour the oil into your palm over your partner, do it by their side. You can still maintain contact with your partner with the under part of your forearm or maybe an elbow.

When you are done, and you can hear the smile of your partner, ask him or her to give you a massage, also. First, you will love it. Second, you will be able to feel what works best and how light or heavy to rub. It will give you insight into your next venture into the world of massage.

I want to take the time, here, to point out that I am not a licensed masseuse. I am not a professional. I do, however, consider myself a gifted amateur and someone who loves to be massaged, too. So, be cautious at first, until you learn a little about what your partner likes and how hard to rub. It's not that hard and it feels great. In some cases, it's even a health benefit to the object of your massage. And one other thing, your pets love to be massaged, too!

Willam Wyndham Wyatt is looking to change the world one reader at a time. He knows it's a hopeless goal, but that is his quest, to follow that star, no matter how hopeless, no matter-well, you get the idea. People have gotten lost in their desire to fit in to a broken society, in his view. They are to blame and society itself is to blame. Question is, can we find our way back? He believes we can, and sooner or later, we will. He just doesn't want it to be later. Read on and find your way back!

Aromatherapy Massage - A Natural Combination

Aromatherapy massage is a popular form of natural healing work that involves using aromatic essential oils to promote health and well being. The essential oils are usually combined with the massage oil and applied to the skin during the massage. Also a therapist might add the oils to a oil diffuser, that allows the natural fragrance to dissipate throughout the room. Using both techniques, the client gets the double effect of breathing the fragrance as well as absorbing the oils through the skin.

Other ways to receive the benefits of aromatherapy would be adding some drops of oil to a warm bath. A small bowl of hot water could also be used as a steam for inhaling. A few drops could be added to a tissue and held close to your nose and breathed in.Essential oils can also be used in hot or cold compresses and soaks to treat muscle aches and pains (e.g., lavender and ginger) Because of their potency, essential oils are diluted in a carrier oil or lotion before being applied to the skin. Any vegetable oil or olive oil can be used. A popular oil for massage therapists is almond oil, because of its pleasant texture and scent. Standard dilutions of essential oils in carrier oils range from 2 to10%

In aromatherapy massage, essential oils are individually selected for their medicinal properties. These properties can be both physical and psychological. Some essential oils have a relaxing effect, other a more uplifting and energizing effect. Some are anti- inflammatory, while others increase the circulation. Following is a list of the more common essential oils used in aromatherapy and their health benefits.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita). Relaxes and soothes the stomach muscles and gastrointestinal tract. Peppermint's actions as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antimicrobial also make it an effective skin treatment, and useful in fighting cold and flu symptoms.

Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobilis). An anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Useful in treating otitis media (earache), skin conditions, menstrual pains, and depression.

Lavender (Lavandula officinalis). A popular aromatherapy oil which mixes well with most essential oils, lavender has a wide range of medicinal and cosmetic applications, including treatment of insect bites, burns, respiratory infections, intestinal discomfort, nausea, migraine, insomnia, depression, and stress.

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea). This natural astringent is not only used to treat oily hair and skin, but is also said to be useful in regulating the menstrual cycle, improving mood, and controlling high blood pressure. Clary sage should not be used by pregnant women.

Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). Has bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, and anti-inflammatory properties that make it a good choice for fighting infection. Recommended for treating sore throat and respiratory infections, vaginal and bladder infections, wounds, and a variety of skin conditions.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). Stimulating essential oil used to treat muscular and rheumatic complaints, as well as low blood pressure, gastrointestinal problems, and headaches.

Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata). A sedative essential oil sometimes used to treat hypertension and tachycardia. It is also valuable in stressful situations in helping to deal with irritation, impatience or anxiety. It has a calming and nurturing effect on the heart. A sedative essential oil sometimes used to treat hypertension and tachycardia.

These are just a few of the many popular essential oils used in aromatherapy massage. Combined with massage, aromatherapy provides still another dimension of emotional and physical healing to the treatment. A simple and subtle, yet profound addition to any massage therapy session.

Aromatherapy Massage

The practice of aromatherapy involves using essential oils from plants to heal the body, decrease pain and help keep one's moods in check. It can help in decreasing depression, increase focus and provides a "pick me up." Essential oils come from roots, flowers and plant extracts. Aromatherapy massage utilizes these essential oils for all of these benefits. They can also be used for other spa-like treatments, for example facials and hydrotherapy baths.

To prepare essential oils for a aromatherapy massage, they should be combined with a carrier oil such as grapeseed or sweet almond oil. The oils that you use will depend on how you are feeling, what you are looking to accomplish or what ailment that you are trying to treat. If you are feeling sad, or stressed, lavender oil is a good essential oil to use. If you need to treat tired and sore muscles, then you may opt for peppermint oil.

A massage therapist can mix up to five essential oils to create your massage oil. You want to make sure that you work with an aromatherapist who is qualified and that knows how to properly mix and use the massage oils so that you don't suffer any skin irritations or other negative reactions.

Many store brought products claim to use aromatherapy. However, it most cases, these include little more then perfumes and fragrances. These do not quality as aromatherapy. Real aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils, which most of these products do not contain. Instead, most of these use chemicals and not essential oils. So don't be fooled. You won't get the same benefits that essential oils provide.

If you are interested in creating your own aromatherapy massage blend, you may want to try the following recipe.

8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil blend, or single essential oil

1 ounce of carrier oil

You will need to mix the oils. The mixture should be stored in a cobalt glass or amber bottle or container. You can use this blend whenever you get your next massage.

An aromatherapy massage can be great way to relax and to relieve tired, sore muscles and a stressed out mind. If you plan on creating your own massage oil, be sure to mix your essential oil blend with a carrier oil so that you do not irritate the skin. You should not place essential oils directly into the skin without a carrier oil. Also, be sure to only use safe oils that will not negatively react to the skin. This may require that you do a little research to determine which essential oils are not safe for human use. Also never use essential oils on babies or young children.

How Can You Benefit From Apricot Massage Oil?

As a masseuse, you are always looking for new massage oils that can benefit your clients. One of the better options you have to choose from today is apricot massage oil. There are countless benefits to the skin and for relaxation purposes that you can get from apricot oil. Here is a little information to help you better understand this oil.

Apricot massage oil is cold-pressed from the seed of apricot fruit. While it has been found to be great for baking, it is even better for skincare. Many skincare specialists live by the motto that if it is healthy to eat than it is good to put on the skin as well. This kind of oil is similar to almond oil in that it has a sweet and bitter taste.

The reason this oil is so ideal for skincare is because it is a tremendous carrier oil. Carrier oil is typically used as a base with other oils and is frequently found with aromatherapy oils to make it easer to spread on the skin. Because apricot massage oil is so light, it is easily absorbed into the skin without greasing up your client.

Not only does it make things easy on you as the masseuse, but it can benefit the client as well. It has been found to be perfect for people with minor skin conditions like eczema. It is also ideal for people with sensitive skin and older people.

Apricot oil contains a number of different things including fatty acids, oleic, linoleic, and vitamins A and E. The vitamins that are within this oil help sooth skin conditions by providing moisture, thus reducing those age marks. It is also beneficial with providing flexibility and moisture into the skin if your skin has been dehydrated.

Outside of the apricot massage oil, you can find this type of oil in several different skincare items as well. Some of the common skincare products that contain this oil include lotions, creams and soaps. There are several different kinds of apricot oils which can make it difficult to tell the difference from one another. Just know that the best are rich in scent and color.

As you can see, there are a number of benefits to apricot oil in regards to skin conditions and massage therapy. If you are a masseuse, this is the perfect oil to use during your sessions. It will help your client's skin, leave them feeling calm and refreshed, and will do so without leaving a greasy sloppy mess.

Massage Techniques Can Be Used at Home to Benefit Your Family

Massage therapy has been practised for thousands of years. Massage techniques have been widely used in Chinese medicine for many years and have been documented as far back as ancient Greece and Persia. The healing benefits associated with massage have been well documented throughout time.

Today, massage remains based on the ancient techniques used centuries ago to drive out pain from the body and promote well-being. Massage is used for a variety of benefits but the general benefits to using massage include increased energy levels, improved circulation and lymphatic drainage, promoting the healing of injuries, alleviating stress and combating insomnia.

Many variations of massage are practiced all over the world. Massage can also be broken down to focus on one particular area of the body. This can include a massage concentrating on the muscles of the upper and lower body, head and scalp massages and the newer technique of facial massage.

Most of us have at some point in our lives experienced the calm serenity that a massage can bring. Massage is the perfect way to pamper yourself or to provide a loved one with a completely relaxing experience. By learning how to massage at home, you can develop the skills needed to promote an increased well-being in your family members, friends and loved ones.

Fortunately, learning how to massage at home is something that can be achieved very easily. One of the most important factors in a beneficial massage, both to the giver and the receiver, is that the environment in which the massage is carried out is one of complete comfort and tranquillity. The greatest results will be achieved if the body and mind are completely at ease.

Before commencing any massage treatment, ensure you have located a peaceful area at home where there will be no disturbances.Once you have located a quiet area in which to carry out the treatment, and you or the person receiving the massage is comfortable then the massage can begin.

It is recommended in most massage practise to use a little massage oil on the hands to ensure smooth movements and strokes. The type of oil used will vary depending on the desired benefit of the massage. Many oils promote a sense of calming and relaxation, whilst if the massage is to promote healing of an injury a more specific oil may be used to ease the muscle or affected body part. Make sure your hands are warm by rubbing them vigorously together then apply the oil or lotion to your hands and then begin to work on the desired area.

Massage techniques can vary widely depending on the desired outcome. For babies and children, the techniques will be lighter and in most circumstances only the finger tips will be used with light pressure. For a relaxation massage, the movements will of medium to light pressure with calming strokes and techniques and can cover the entire body. For sport injuries and muscle problems, where a deeper part of the muscle needs to be reached, the movements are more firm and concentrated on the specific target area.

Massage is recognized world wide as a healing therapy and its popularity is increasing rapidly. New techniques are continually being introduced to the Western world, and along with these come many new benefits and results. More and more people are learning this great skill at home, so that they have the resources to enrich the lives of not only those around them but also themselves throughout complete relaxation of mind and body.

The Healing Art of Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy was used by ancient cultures to enhance mood and promote healing. Ancient Egyptians used essential oils to embalm the dead and the ancient Greeks thought that certain essential oils could make them smarter. There are a few people in history who are credited for what we now know as aromatherapy massage.

A French chemist named René-Maurice Gattefossé discovered the healing properties of lavender oil when he burned himself in his lab one day. He plunged his burn into the closest container of liquid he could find. That liquid just happened to be lavender oil. He noticed that his burn seemed to heal more quickly than it normally would have and that there was no scarring. This discovery made him start looking into the healing properties of lavender oil.

Madame Marguerite Maury (1895-1968) established aromatherapy clinics throughout Europe. Because she wasn't a doctor, she had no authority to prescribe that essential oils be administered orally, so she developed a system of administering oils through massage. She created modern day aromatherapy massage.

Essential oils are made from distilling parts of plants. The bark, flowers or leaves of a fragrant plant are distilled to make a potent liquid. Essential oils are not usually oily at all. This liquid can be mixed with a carrier oil, like grapeseed oil or sweet almond oil, to make a fragrant oil that can be used for massage. Each oil has its own healing properties and is beneficial in treating specific ailments. Some of the most common essential oils are:

  • Clary Sage
  • Eucalyptus
  • Geranium
  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Peppermint
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Rosemary

  • Ylang Ylang

There are some essential oils that can aggravate certain conditions. For example, you shouldn't use clary sage or rosemary essential oils if you have high blood pressure, a seizure disorder or are pregnant. Before using essential oils be sure to do your research and find out what oils are safe to use with the health conditions you have. There are some oils like bitter almond and sassafras that are considered dangerous and aren't even used by most aromatherapy professionals.

When you get an aromatherapy massage the therapist will talk to you about your health concerns. The therapist will also try to get a feel for the types of fragrances you like. Based on the information you give, the therapist will blend a mixture of essential oils specially suited for you.

Aromatherapy massages are usually relaxing. The strokes used in aromatherapy massage are based on Swedish massage techniques. They're usually long, flowing strokes. At the end of your massage the therapist will give you the remainder of the massage oil to use at home.

Making Massage Enjoyable - What To Do To Prepare For a Massage

Whether you are new to massage or an experienced spa-goer, there are things you can do get the most from your massage. Being prepared will make your massage experience much more enjoyable and rewarding. So what do really need to do to be prepared for your massage?

Check For Licenses, Schooling and References
Finding a good massage therapist is a lot like finding any other professional. The first step is to check out any local or state requirements that a true massage therapist is required to have. Then only go to those that meet the requirements. It is worth the extra effort to find the right massage therapist.

Eating or drinking before massage
Yes, but it is best to refrain from eating for 1-2 hours before massage, to prevent discomfort. Eating light or not at all is highly recommended, due to the toxins that are being flushed out of the body. The body digesting at the same time may cause discomfort.

To shower or not
The best way to prepare for a body work session is to take a hot shower. This not only helps with being clean, but the pores of the skin open up to absorb whichever quality oil or lotion the therapist chooses to use for the session.

What to wear
Most massage takes place in the nude, but you are fully draped at all times. If you do not want to remove all your clothing, wear clothing that you will be comfortable wearing during the massage and will allow the massage therapist to touch the areas of your body you need to be worked on.

When to arrive
Be on time or early. If you arrive in a frenzied, rushed state, it will take longer to relax and you will miss the best part of the massage. If there is time, take advantage of the sauna, steam bath or hot tub. It will warm your muscles and make it easier for the therapist to achieve results. If the hot tub has chlorinated water, be sure to shower before your massage.

Info needed
Before the session, give accurate health information and let the massage therapist know what you expect from the massage. Before the session, tell your massage therapist what your needs are and do not be afraid to discuss any apprehensions or concerns. Your massage therapist is a professional dedicated to do his or her best to make you feel at ease.

Allow time
Schedule enough time to get checked in, have the massage and take advantage of the recovery time after your massage. This down time can be so relaxing. It takes a few minutes to recover from a great massage before you can go back into the real world again.

Improve Health and Relax - Thai Massage

Regardless of our lifestyle, or our financial or social status, we all need to relax. There are hundreds of different ways that people like to relax around the world. Some smoke or drink, others play games or watch TV, some people even exercise! There are healthy ways, neutral ways and unhealthy ways. One way of relaxing, that is usually healthy and effective, is to have a massage. There are many different kinds of massage, including oil, neck and shoulders, Thai, Swedish and Chinese, to name a few. One particular type massage that is popular is Thai massage.

Thai massage has plenty of advantages, including its value and its physical and psychological benefits. Like cuisine, it needs to be experienced in its native environment to get the 'real thing.' Thai massage in Thailand is rarely expensive. A full body massage for one hour can cost as little a $4 U.S. For that you get a good working over, starting at your feet and legs and then your arms and hands. The masseuse or masseur then asks you to roll over onto your front and massages your back an shoulders, then sits you up a little, resting your head on their lap to finish your shoulders and then sometimes your head. It really is a fantastic experience, but the most important thing to do is relax and give your body up to the masseuse or masseur.

The physical and psychological benefits are almost immediate and can last for hours or even days. There is an instant slow bounce to your step and a general aura of happiness and peace. Some people enjoy it and believe in it so much that they even lean Thai massage to take back to their home countries to earn a living from, or relax their family members.

There are also one or two potential disadvantages of Thai massage. Firstly, it hurts and secondly, it is very rarely performed by a qualified professional. Many people cannot relax properly, which causes some discomfort during the massage. In addition, even if you are able to relax entirely, the correct procedure involves the use of elbows and heels pushed into your flesh. It can be quite uncomfortable for anyone who is not a bit of a masochist. However, there is the opinion that the more pain during the massage is evident as more effective relaxation and physical benefit for the hours or days following it. Moreover, due to its origins and the low cost, a Thai massage is usually performed by a masseuse or masseur with little or no recognized qualifications. Years of experience, maybe, but walking on someone's back or digging your elbow into someone's stomach can be potentially dangerous. The ways these people learn Thai massage is often from their peers, and from experience with satisfied or dissatisfied clients.

The fact that Thai massage is so popular, both in Thailand and around the world, is probably proof in itself that it is beneficial, healthy and good value. It has become one of the top ways to relax and even become a good money-spinner for those who want to learn Thai massage for personal or financial reasons.

How a Senior Massage Makes You Feel

As a senior what you will find if you try one of the senior massages and the massage stones you will be able to feel alive again. The massages are wonderful for the circulation and after the massage therapists works the joints even though they are gentle the blood rushes to the tissues revitalizing the area. The joints create fluids again and feel vibrant. Once the massage therapist is able to provide you a body massage the use of massage stones can be a nice benefit. When you have the warm stones placed on the various parts of your body it is like have the therapist performing a deep muscle massage.

The heat warms you deep inside and the joints can feel some relief from the aches and pains that have joined you in your older age. Some of the seniors are using the spas, massage stone, and massage therapy in addition to the medications they are taking and find that the muscle massages help loosen the stiff joints and assist with toning your muscles. Most seniors will admit that once they have started and have gotten through the initial senior massage they enjoy the brief time of relaxation.

Massage stones are available and can be used hot or cold. We spend quite a bit of time selecting the stones before they are sold to customers to ensure they are true basalt stones which are volcanic in nature and are a source from the beaches of the South Americas. Quality is ensured at the initial selection and then once again when the stones are received at the facility in Arizona. This is one of the reasons customers keep coming back...through their testimonials you will read the full satisfaction the customers are receiving when it comes to the selection of the massage stones.

An example of a set of stones that could be considered by a senior customer would be the crescent shaped marble stones used around the eyes for relaxation, stress relief and how the stones help reduce swelling. Let's look at how and why a senior massage makes you feel good. The heat of the massage stones warms the skin. This allows the body to loosen up so the massage therapist is able to work the deeper muscles. Once the deeper muscles are massaged then the senior will immediately feel the benefits of the increased circulation, the improved blood flow that goes to the surrounding tissues. At the end of the senior massage the customer is able to feel the full effects of the deep muscle massage they just received from the therapist.

If you know if someone that would benefit from a senior massage, mention to them the benefits they would receive and how good it would make them feel. Locate a spa or place that offers senior massages and see if they are interested in trying it one time. Some say that after they are able to feel the full effects of the senior massage then they consider it part of their health management.

How to Get Rid Of Cellulite With the Help of Massage

Doing daily massage helps cellulite in many ways. Aside from helping cellulite, massage is natural, effective and perhaps one of the most pleasant treatments for cellulite. By combining massage with a cellulite cream or oil, either bought or homemade, you combine the two treatments to make them far more effective than either alone.

Cellulite is thought to be caused by a build up of toxins, causing the connective tissue between the skin and fat layer to become misshapen. This causes the lumpy appearance over thighs, buttocks and stomach. Diet and exercise help but are often not enough to combat the appearance of cellulite as it doesn't just occur in the overweight, but even people who are considered at an ideal weight.

Massage helps cellulite in several ways, by improving skin elasticity, increasing circulation to the area, boosting metabolism to help eliminate toxins and by decreasing fluid retention.

By increasing the circulation to the troubled area, toxins are eliminated from the body faster, helping with cellulite by reducing their build up. Massage relaxes the muscles of the area, allowing for more blood flow which in turn is responsible for helping the body rid itself of toxins.

Another way the body rids itself of toxins is though the lymphatic system, a system that helps the body with fluids right under the skin. These fluids are responsible for carrying toxins away from areas but often get blocked or slowed down. Massage helps give the lymphatic system a boost, stimulating it to drain toxins and any accumulated fluid in the area.

Massage can be done for cellulite with a regular lotion or used with creams or oils specifically for fighting cellulite. When doing massage to help cellulite, always massage in the direction of the heart, pushing fluids and toxins toward the elimination system. Combine light strokes and heavier strokes to stimulate both the muscles and the lymphatic system as the muscles are deeper than the lymphatic system.

There are any number of tools made specifically for cellulite massage. These aren't needed but can be of some assistance when trying to get to hard to reach body parts. Be cautious not to over massage the areas, especially when using any tools for assistance. This should not be painful but instead be very pleasant.

Massage is one of the most basic treatments than can be done to combat cellulite, but it's also one of the most effective. When used as part of your daily cellulite removal routine, it will help you see results faster.

Cellulite is a serious skin disease. It is often recommended to use a proper guideline for curing cellulite.

Massage Chairs Feature Foot Reflexology Massage

There many different types of alternative medicine that are available today. One particular type of alternative medicine which has been practiced for centuries is reflexology. Reflexology utilizes different movements such as massaging, squeezing and pushing different parts of the feet. Reflexology has evolved in our knowledge of it with it. Although the concept of reflexology is not new its availability in massage chairs has occurred in just the last few years.

Reflexology is unique in certain respects as it utilizes what are known as the trigger point on the feet. It is thought that these trigger points are related to different organs in the body. As with many alternative medicines, sufficient studies have not been conducted to prove or deny these claims.

One of the good things about reflexology massage is that there are no known side effects. The worst that can possibly happen is that your feet are massaged for too long. If your feet are over massage then it is possible that they could be a little bit sore afterward.

The manufacturers of massage chairs have extensively studied many of these alternative medicines including reflexology. Many of the concepts of reflexology have now been duplicated with technology in massage chairs. This is a convenient way to receive reflexology foot massage on-the-fly.

Massage chairs come with leg rests that contain foot wells. The foot wells are specially designed to deliver an effective reflexology foot massage. Located under need the feet are either reflexology plates or airbags with reflexology nodes. These are designed to gently stimulate the trigger points on the soles of the feet.

To provide a soothing foot massage, most manufacturers of massage chairs utilize an air massage system. Specially designed airbags are located in the foot wells to provide a compression massage. Compression massage delivers a soothing and relieving massage for the feet.

In order to coordinate all the action going on in the foot wells, massage chairs utilize a computer board. Customized programs have been developed to deliver the reflexology foot massage. This enables the massage chair to activate and deactivate the different systems to provide a relieving reflexology foot massage.

The reflexology foot massage is activated by using the remote control. The remote control then starts the software program for the foot massage. These coordinate the airbags and the stimulation of the trigger points of the feet.

Some massage chairs use reflexology plates. The airbags are used to push the feet downward onto the reflexology plate. This is one method to stimulate the trigger points on the feet. Other manufacturers use reflexology nodes on the airbags. The air bags inflate underneath the feet which push the nodes into the trigger points on the soles of your feet.

Practitioners have reflexology have developed different maps of the feet. These maps show the location of different trigger points and their corresponding organs. As these areas are stimulated it helps to relax its related organ.

There are really two parts to receiving a reflexology foot massage in massage chairs. One is to write a thorough and relieving foot massage. The second is to stimulate the trigger points which induce its corresponding organ to relax. By systematically massaging the feet, it helps to relax the entire body.

If you are interested in learning more about reflexology foot massage, then check out some of the models from Omega, Panasonic and Sanyo. These are the top manufacturers of massage chairs and they have developed effective reflexology foot massages. Many of their models contain reflexology foot massage as a standard feature.

These companies understand the importance of the seat in providing a full body relaxation. Massage chairs also contain a number of other massage and therapeutic treatments in addition to foot reflexology.

8 Easy Steps to the Perfect Foot Massage

Just about everybody I have ever met loves having their feet massaged! In some cultures, foot massage is considered a medical therapy. In all cultures, it is considered a wonderful indulgence!

Why does foot massage feel so good? Reflexologists believe it's because different areas of the foot are connected to different areas of the body. As such, a reflexology practitioner believes they can treat your entire body through a well administered foot massage.

Here are some simple steps to help you give a great home foot massage:

Step 1. Make sure your "patient" or friend feels completely comfortable and relaxed. Arrange the right chair or bed until they feel able to sit or lie comfortably for at least 30 minutes.

Step 2. Soak the feet in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes. Feel free to add some fragrant essential oils for an aroma therapeutic benefit.

Step 3. Apply a lubricant. (Note: if your patient has sensitive skin, or prefers not to use a lubricant, that's OK. A lubricant simply makes the massage easier to complete). Use the cream, lotion or oil of your choice. Do not apply it directly to the foot. Instead, apply it to your hands first and rub it between your hands to warm the lubricant before placing your hands onto your patient's foot.

Step 4. Begin at the top of the foot. Now, use a gentle, long-stroke style massage from toe up to the angle. be sure to work gently along the instep. Next, work on the sole of the foot. Make small circles with your fingers or thumb and increase the pressure gradually. Always ask your friend how they are feeling to check if your pressure is too hard or too soft. As you move to the heel and ball of the foot, more pressure may be required. If you get lost at anytime, always remember you are working from toes-to-heel and top-to-bottom. You should also include the sides of the foot, being careful as the sides are often more delicate and sensitive.

Step 5. The next step is to cradle the foot one hand and use your other hand to apply a stretch and flex to your friend's foot. Begin at the ankle, then do the ball. You can repeat this 3 or 4 times and change directions for a full stretch of the foot.

Step 6. Now your attention switches to the sole of the foot. Using your thumbs or knuckles, apply a firm but gentle kneading motion. It is most important that the arch of the foot is your focus.

Step 7. Toes! Beginning with the big toe and working towards the pinky toe, squeeze the toes one at a time and apply small stroking massage to each tow. If your patient likes, you may always massage between each toe. You may also "snap" or "flick" each toe gently, but briskly between your fingers.

Step 8. Complete the foot massage by briefly revisiting the sole of the foot with light, circle strokes. Then bring your hands out and over to make long strokes along the top and instep of the foot. This time work down from the ankle and end at the toes.

That's it! Of course, you need to go ahead and massage the second foot. It's most important that the giver of the massage enjoys the process as much as the receiver. To enhance your own pleasure, make sure you are relaxed and well-hydrated. Playing your favorite music in the background will also make for an enjoyable experience.

Creating Environment For a Soothing Massage

A massage is the unsurpassed solution to a person's weariness. No other method can be as good as providing a massage. Getting a good massage is bliss for the receiver. It can provide mental as well as physical peace to a person if provided in the right type of environment. Creating a good mood is very important for the person undergoing the treatment. If the person getting the massage is not finding pleasure, then it is waste of time both for the receiver and the masseur.

For a suitable surrounding, you need a few objects. Here is a vivid description of a few of them:

1. Music: The first and the foremost thing that is required to create a mood is the music. You need to play some soft and relaxing music while massaging a person. This enhances the effect and provides great mental satisfaction to the receiver. It is a better idea to play music that will be liked by the person experiencing the massage. Music has always been the most widely accepted form of relaxation since a long time. Thus, if you play some sort of good music definitely the massage can be enjoyed as well as benefitted more by the receiver.

2. Candles: The second major item needed to create the mood of the receiver is the candles. Candles that provide a favorable aroma are liked by people. You can choose various candles like lavender, rose, jasmine or any other favorite smell of the person receiving the massage. A sweet odor also helps in providing mental tranquility to the receiver.

3. Flowers: You can also place flowers in the room where you provide massage to people. The sweet smell of flowers diverts the attention of the people receiving the massage from their daily tensions to serenity and spirituality.

4. Oils: The other important object required for the massage is the massage oil. It helps in reducing the friction between the hands of the masseur and the body of the receiver. Massage oils that provide some benefit to the body of the receiver are always the best choice. You can opt for almond oil or jojoba oil. Other varieties are also available in the market these days.

5. Towels: The next necessary requirement is the towel. You require at least two big towels for the massage. One should be placed under the person getting the massage and one on top of him to hide certain unclothed parts of his body. You should make the towels warm to provide warmth to the receiver of the massage.

6. Books or video: This is basically for the beginners. If you do not have the exact idea of the steps to be followed, then you should buy a good book or a video to learn the accurate steps for the massage. You can also take help from the online sites available for the purpose.

7. Lights: The lights of the room where the massage is under progress should not be too bright. The lights should be kept dim, to make the person feel more comfortable and warm. Bright lights tend to irritate the eyes of the person taking the massage.

Whats the Difference Between a Sports and Thai Massage?

There are many similarities between Sports massage and Thai massage, and many obvious differences, though many practitioners feel they are extremely compatible and combine the two to great affect.

Sports massage is one of the most popular western therapeutic approaches to massage. It is not a general relaxation massage, but one focused on reducing tension, pain, injury and increasing the performance of the body. It is generally a deep massage that works on the principles of muscle, bone and nerve function. Usually given on a massage table, with the use of oil, sports massage employs a range of various techniques to stretch and realign the muscles of the body. This will often include a number of applied stretches. It is common to undergo a postural assessment before a session, for the practitioner to consider where the person's problem may ultimately lie. The focus of a session will be to relieve symptoms of pain in the area affected, but also in areas not directly affected but indirectly causing the symptoms. Following a session, suggestions may be made for a routine of exercises to be practiced at home, to build on the improvements made during the massage session.

Sports massage is not merely for the benefit of the sports person - in fact, it is far more common for the average person seeking sports massage to be an office based professional suffering with upper back, neck and shoulder tension and pain, or lower back tightness, weakness and pain. It is beneficial for everyone.

Thai Yoga massage, often referred to as just Thai massage for short, is part of the ancient and traditional medical system of Thailand. Practiced by at least one member of most households, it has been used as a general preventative healthcare system among Thai families. The Thais are not knowledgeable of anatomy and physiology like practitioners of western massage techniques such as sports massage, but approach the massage from an understanding of energy channels that run through the body, like blood vessels and very similar to the Chinese meridians of acupuncture. Thai massage manipulates the energy channels of the body primarily, and the joints, muscles and soft tissues secondary. It is given with the recipient fully clothed, wearing loose comfortable attire, on a futon mat on the floor.

The massage is given in a very slow, meditative and mindful way. The practitioner uses technically brilliant body mechanics to transfer body weight, rather than muscle strength, and will use most parts of his/her body to administer the massage. Deep, slow squeezes and compressions are applied, but Thai massage is most renowned for the amazing myriad of applied yoga stretches, that challenge and open the recipient's body, leaving them feeling relaxed, energised, taller and more expansive.

Thai massage can be given for general relaxation or healthcare, or can be focused on a more specific therapeutic outcome, akin to sports massage. It is particularly beneficial to the average person who sits at a desk all day, with little movement of their body. The stretches and manipulations of Thai massage really get the energy flowing that often becomes stagnant when we are stationary for long periods.

Many of the techniques of sports and Thai massage are very similar, such as the compressions and stretches, and Sports massage can and will often be applied over clothing or towels. Some practitioners have studied both and will combine them for very effective results.

Contrary to what some may have heard, good, skilfully applied Sports or Thai massage will not cause you traumatising pain or leave you bruised and aching for days. You may experience some therapeutic 'good pain' that affects an immediate feeling of relief, but no more.
